Our Own Oslo 2011

On a business trip to Oslo, Harald, a conservative forty-something engineer, literally collides with a bank worker, Vilborg, and her drunk boss in the hotel lobby after his sales presentation. Harald steps in to calm the tense moment, persuading the annoyed hotel reception manager to keep everyone settled for the night. After tucking Vilborg’s inebriated boss into bed—a routine task for Harald, who once cared for his now-deceased alcoholic father—he finds himself swept into a magical night of sightseeing, dining, and romance with Vilborg in the Norwegian capital, a rare break from his orderly, predictable world.

Back home in Reykjavik, Harald hopes to build on that first connection and invites Vilborg to breakfast. What begins as a hopeful morning quickly spirals into a series of harsh blows to Vilborg’s life. She’s accused of embezzling bank funds by her now sober boss, her car is repossessed, and she reveals a gambling addiction. An emotional breakdown follows, during which she even contemplates drowning herself. Harald steps in again, bringing her to his apartment to calm her with hot chocolate and a steady, nonjudgmental presence. The morning-after honesty leads Harald to propose continuing their story at his summer cabin, where the bond between them deepens even as their separate burdens start to press in from every side.

The summer cabin becomes a crossroads for personal history and practical obligation. Harald is the summer cabin association chair and also the sewer-line maintenance man, while his developmentally disabled sister adds another layer of responsibility to his already full plate. Vilborg carries her own heavy load, including a teenage son she initially forgets to pick up, and her past with Palmi—her ex-husband—returns to complicate the growing attraction between them. To make matters more tangled, Harald’s mom is pursued by her long-time boyfriend, further testing the couple’s resolve. The atmosphere at the cabin grows crowded with interference, drinking, and competing loyalties, and Palmi’s unexpected appearance pushes Vilborg and Harald toward a fragile, emotionally fraught crossroads.

After a night of heavy drinking shared by Vilborg and Palmi, their private reunion occurs inside a tent, a moment that underscored the unresolved nature of their connection. The exact meaning of what happened between them remains unclear, and the spark between Vilborg and Harald seems to flicker out just as quickly as it had appeared, leaving both of them to grapple with disappointment and desire in equal measure.

When Vilborg eventually leaves with her son, she and Harald both flash back to that carefree Oslo night and the sense of possibility it held.
