Our Day Out 1977

In a deprived part of Liverpool, a group of pupils in a Progress Class set out for a day trip to Conwy Castle, hoping to learn, explore, and briefly escape the pressures of their everyday lives. Before departure they buy sweets, and the deputy head disciplinarian teacher, Mr. Briggs Alun Armstrong joins them on the bus, bringing a strict but capable presence to the outing.

On the journey, they weave through a day of sightseeing, stopping at a cafe, a zoo, and the beach near the castle, and later winding up at a lively fun fair. The mood is a mix of mischief and curiosity as the children shoplift and cause small-scale trouble along the way. An older boy, Reilly [Stephen Caffrey], fixes his attention on his young teacher, Susan [Elizabeth Estensen], who gently brushes off his advances by steering him toward Linda [Jacqueline Lucas], who herself has been trying it on with her own boyfriend, Colin [Lennox Greaves].

At the castle, the group confronts a sudden loss when one child, Carol [Julie Jones], goes missing. Mr. Briggs discovers Carol on the cliffs, where she laments the need to return to a troubled home life. He shouts at her to come back, but when she threatens to jump, he softens and calmly talks her down, offering a moment of quiet, compassionate presence amid the day’s chaos.
