One of the central figures of the story, Daud, finds himself hunting when tragedy strikes as NKVD officers arrest his father. His mother soon reveals that the arrest stems from the actions of Seda—Daud’s girlfriend—who had spurned the unwanted advances of Kasim, the commander of the local NKVD unit. Determined to understand more about the situation, Daud seeks counsel from Mullah Arsamak, who resides in a nearby village. The mullah listens empathetically and cautions Daud against allowing feelings of despair or hatred to cloud his heart. Tragically, during Daud’s visit, his mother passes away, leaving him with deep sorrow.
