During wartime, 12‑year‑old Hugh is sent from England to live with the Andrews family in Ohio. Their son Don, 11, welcomes him and his school friends, but tension rises when Hugh befriends Don’s father, excels at chess, impresses Don’s girlfriend Betty and quickly becomes the most popular boy. Feeling eclipsed, Don becomes depressed and runs away, prompting Hugh to step in.
