Odd Girl Out 2005

Vanessa Snyder, [Alexa Vega], is a bright eighth-grader whose world centers on a close friendship with Stacey Larson, [Leah Pipes], and Nikki Rodriguez, [Elizabeth Rice], who secretly envies their bond. Outside the inner circle, the kindhearted Emily, [Shari Dyon Perry], and the “wannabe” Tiffany Thompson, [Alicia Morton], long to belong to the group. Vanessa’s loving, divorced mother Barbara, [Lisa Vidal], is proud of her daughter and supports her in every way.

One day, Nikki manipulates Vanessa into getting closer to Tony, [Chad Biagini], a boy Stacey — and, at times, Vanessa — both admire. As a result, Vanessa is pushed out of the clique, Tiffany slips inside, and Stacey pretends to remain Vanessa’s friend while enabling the abuse, even during gym class. The clique, joined by Ezra, [Joey Nappo], a boy who once fought Tony, launches a cruel online campaign—the website “Hating Vanessa”—where classmates post hostile messages about her. Emily urges Vanessa not to retreat back to the group, but Vanessa tries to mend fences, only to be rebuffed.

In the face of the bullying, Vanessa hides in a bathroom stall while the others converge, gossiping about her as she overhears their cruel conversation. That night, she shaves off much of her hair and misses school the next day, fearing the taunts will only worsen. Barbara confronts Stacey’s mother, Denise, [Rhoda Griffis], who dismisses the bullying as trivial. When Barbara learns of Vanessa’s truancy, she presents printed insults from the online messages to Miss Jessup, [Margo Moorer], the principal, who admits she cannot punish verbal abuse alone. Meanwhile, Stacey pretends that Vanessa copied her assignment, and the dispute is ultimately resolved when Vanessa, Stacey, and their mothers work with Miss Jessup to address the situation.

Vanessa’s spirits lift briefly when she learns she’s still invited to Stacey’s birthday party, now moved to the following night. Barbara and Vanessa attend what they believe is a party at a club, only to discover Stacey’s deception, and Vanessa breaks down, attempting to overdose. She is rushed to the emergency room and treated. In class, Emily becomes the sole peer to visit Vanessa in the hospital and defend her, marking a turning point in Vanessa’s support network. Back home, Barbara discovers a group chat where students taunt Vanessa and pressure her to harm herself again. Barbara prints the messages, and Miss Jessup suspends Nikki, Tiffany, and Ezra for a week while implementing a stronger anti-bullying policy.

Upon returning to school, Vanessa and Stacey reconnect online after Stacey apologizes. Stacey’s message is then shared with Nikki, who, with Tiffany, mocks Vanessa in the crowded hallway after graduation. Vanessa confronts Stacey openly, sees through her lies, and the crowd’s reaction signals a dramatic reversal: the bullying clique dissolves. Barbara looks on with pride as Vanessa and Emily share a hug and depart together for an after-party, marking a hopeful new chapter beyond the hurt.
