Baron Bear Bailey is a music-store coworker who secretly harbors romantic feelings for his childhood friend Nikki. Along with their friends, Ian and Sarah, they spin records and share small-town dreams. When Bear returns home to find his cat Sandy dead after apparently ingesting oxycodone, the mood turns from hopeful to haunted. In a bid to change their fortunes, Bear buys Nikki a peculiar gift at an occult shop: the “One Wish Willow,” a novelty toy that supposedly grants one wish per person once broken. Its glossy whisper promises something almost magical, and the purchase tugs Bear toward a dangerous possibility.
That night, Nikki asks Bear if he truly likes her, and he stumbles through an uncertain denial. Frustration and longing mingle as Bear, trying to seize control of a situation he fears he can’t really steer, breaks the willow and makes a desperate wish: for Nikki to love him more than anyone in the world. The wish sows tension from the start. Nikki asks to sleep at Bear’s house, sharing that her estranged father is dying of cancer, and what begins as tentative closeness deepens into a charged, complicated connection. In the quiet of the night, she leans in and kisses him, but a sudden scream and retreat reveal a fracture in their bond that neither of them fully understands.
The next morning, Bear is jolted when Nikki creates a memorial using the remnants of his cat, disturbing him deeply. That same night, she explains that her erratic behavior came partly from MDMA and reveals her growing feelings for him. The couple’s romance blossoms, and Bear begins to believe in a future with Nikki. Yet Ian reveals a troubling truth: Nikki told Sarah that she saw Bear as her “little brother” before they started dating, and she had lied about her father’s illness. The revelation gnaws at Bear, who then experiences a disturbing moment as Nikki watches him sleep and accuses him of not reciprocating. The fear of losing her to a lie or a manipulation gnaws at him as the relationship tightens.
Early the following day, Bear makes a grim discovery: Nikki has used the cat’s remains to craft a macabre sandwich for him. The atmosphere grows heavier as Ian accuses Bear of using Nikki, suggesting her transformation isn’t love but something more corrosive. Bear calls One Wish Willow’s customer service to cancel the wish, only to be confronted by a disquieting voice that insists the wish will expire only when Bear or Nikki dies, and then delivers a chilling reminder by placing a hysterically screaming Nikki on the line. The pair still goes to a party at Ian’s house, where a drunken game of Jenga becomes a nightmare. Nikki performs a violent, incestuous retelling of Hansel and Gretel, and when Bear is dared to kiss the person to his left, Nikki pushes aside Sarah to kiss Bear herself.
Nikki’s grip on reality continues to fracture as she screams and then maims herself with a broken bottle. Later that night, she threatens suicide to force Bear to join her in bed. Sarah texts Bear to meet at the park for a talk, and a lucid, desperate Nikki begs Bear to kill her, insisting that her obsessive persona is asleep. In the park, Sarah reveals that Nikki and Ian had been casually hooking up for two years and suggests Nikki is using Bear to retaliate against Ian. The tension erupts when Nikki appears and murders Sarah by repeatedly slamming her head into a brick, then orders Bear to return home while she disposes of the body.
Driven by fear and a mounting sense of doom, Bear buys the last two One Wish Willows and tries to reverse his wish, but the magic proves impervious to reversal. He pleads with Ian to undo the wish, yet Ian instead wishes for a billion dollars, sending cash cascading from the ceiling in a surreal, gleaming downpour. Bear returns home with the final Willow, determined to force Nikki to reverse the wish, only to discover Sarah’s mutilated body hidden and Nikki wearing Sarah’s clothing, pointing a gun at both of them. Ian enters the house and is immediately shot dead by Nikki, leaving Bear trapped and terrified. He locks himself in the bathroom and consumes the last of the oxycodone, then briefly considers vomiting it up, unsure if there is any way out. Outside, Nikki uses the last Willow, and a version of Bear emerges from the bathroom, compelled to kiss Nikki before overdosing.
In the final, heart-wrenching moment, the real Nikki regains a shred of control just as she contemplates shooting herself. The scene leaves her surrounded by carnage and chaos, screaming with a wrenching mix of horror, heartbreak, and disbelief at the consequences of a love twisted by possession and the lure of a single, dangerous wish.
