Oba: The Last Samurai 2011

During the Battle of Saipan, on 7 July 1944, Captain Sakae Ōba Takayuki Yamada leads a final banzai charge against the United States Marine Corps on the island of Saipan. It stands as the largest banzai charge of the Pacific War, a brutal clash that stretches for about 15 hours and results in over 4,000 Japanese deaths. Although the Americans declare the island secure on 9 July, Ōba and a small band of survivors slip into the jungle and launch a guerrilla-style campaign from Mount Tapochau, a natural fortress with steep slopes and commanding heights that overlook every possible approach. The holdout becomes a tense, shadow war against a technologically superior foe, marked by patience, cunning, and a stubborn will to endure.

With only 46 soldiers and 200 civilians at his side, Ōba earns the nickname “the Fox” among American troops for his shrewd strategies and relentless persistence. For 512 days, he and his dwindling force resist, sustainment lines fraying, while the guerrilla fight chips away at morale and patience on both sides. The mountaintop fortress remains the center of gravity for the operation, and its rugged terrain gives Ōba a stubborn edge as he adapts to changing conditions and dwindling resources. The arc of the campaign unfolds against the broader backdrop of Japan’s looming capitulation, which occurred after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, intensifying the sense that every day on the island was a microcosm of a war drawing to a close.

Finally, on 1 December 1945, Ōba and his surviving companions descend from the mountain, their march a quiet, disciplined ceremony that echoes a formal surrender. They sing Spirit of Infantry, an Imperial Japanese Army infantry song, as they come into the light and present their sword to the American commander in a dignified gesture. This moment marks the last organized resistance of Japanese forces in the Second World War, a solemn coda that encapsulates endurance, honor, and the heavy toll of a war that stretched far beyond the battlefield.
