Danni Sanders is a struggling writer who finds herself working as a photo editor for Depravity, an online magazine based in vibrant New York City. Facing challenges both in her professional life and her social interactions, Danni makes a questionable choice to impress her crush, Colin, a charismatic co-worker and social media influencer. After a fleeting moment of inspiration while under the influence, she concocts a false story about attending a prestigious writers’ retreat in Paris. With determination, Danni spends the following week crafting edited images of herself in Paris, all from the comfort of her Brooklyn apartment, and even establishes a website to back up her tall tale. This ruse unexpectedly attracts a small but growing following on Instagram, including the attention of Colin himself.

However, Danni’s fabricated life takes a dramatic turn when she posts a digitally manipulated photo by the Arc de Triomphe, only for that landmark to be tragically bombed soon after. Pressured to maintain her false narrative, she claims to have witnessed the attack firsthand and fakes her return from Paris, reuniting with her concerned parents at the airport. As she garners sympathy and praise from her family, co-workers, and online followers, Danni leans further into her deceitful persona.

Her path crosses with that of Rowan, a passionate teenage anti-gun activist and survivor of a school shooting, when Danni attends a trauma support group. Inspired by Rowan’s powerful story and substantial social media presence, Danni boldly writes an article detailing her fabricated experience during the terrorist attack. The piece gains traction, particularly thanks to Rowan’s influence, leading to unforeseen fame for Danni. As their friendship deepens, she finds herself playing a supportive sisterly role in Rowan’s life.

Invited to an influencer party with Colin, Danni experiences an awkward intimate encounter that leaves her feeling unsettled and prompts her to take Plan B. This moment of realization forces her to confront the facade she’s built; the fame she desired is overshadowed by the yearning to be a genuinely good person.

As Danni prepares to speak at a rally alongside Rowan, unforeseen chaos ensues when counter-protestors trigger fireworks, resulting in Rowan suffering a PTSD episode and hospitalization. Overwhelmed by guilt for her deception, Danni grapples with her conscience, especially when her skeptical co-worker, Harper, uncovers the truth and presents her with a tough choice: come clean or face exposure. Reluctantly, Danni publishes an apology acknowledging her fraud, but this act quickly spirals her life out of control. She becomes a social media outcast, loses her job, strains her friendship with Rowan, and is forced to live with her parents due to online harassment.

A month later, during a support group for victims of online shaming, Danni is encouraged to seek forgiveness from those she has wronged. She finds herself at a spoken-word event where Rowan articulately confronts Danni’s betrayal, emphasizing that she will never reconcile with her actions. Impressed by Rowan’s courage, Danni realizes that seeking amends is more about her own redemption than genuine remorse for the hurt she caused. In a moment of clarity, she quietly leaves the theater, understanding the futility of what she hoped to achieve.
