When a dedicated undercover detective is tragically gunned down while probing a series of Porsche thefts, Lieutenant Vincent Bracey, portrayed by Randy Quaid, is left with no choice but to recruit a promising young officer. Enter Benjamin “Benjy” Taylor, played by D.B. Sweeney, a 22-year-old from San Diego who possesses extensive knowledge of German engineering along with the rookie status that may keep him under the radar. Bracey assigns him the critical task of infiltrating a suspicious Porsche garage believed to serve as a front for the grand theft auto operation. The lieutenant suspects that the wealthy playboy Ted Varrick, brilliantly portrayed by Charlie Sheen, is not just involved but is indeed the mastermind behind both the thefts and the detective’s murder.

Donning the alias “Billy Ayles,” Benjy relocates to Los Angeles, securing a position as a mechanic at Technique Porsche. In a twist of fate, after Benjy completes repairs on Ted’s prized vehicle one evening, an unexpected camaraderie forms between the two men, and Benjy finds himself drawn to Ted’s sister, Ann, played by Lara Harris. As he navigates this new world, Benjy uncovers another layer to the crime syndicate - a rival gang led by Frank Martin, portrayed by R.D. Call. This revelation raises doubts in Benjy’s mind regarding Ted’s true involvement, contrasting with Bracey’s insistence on Ted’s guilt.

As Benjy dives deeper into this double life, Ted enlists him in a side business involving the theft of more Porsches, with garage manager Malcolm, played by Bill Duke, orchestrating operations. However, Benjy’s initial attempts at pilfering vehicles are rife with failure, catching the attention of Martin’s syndicate, which brutally warns him by inflicting a cut to his hand. In a heart-pounding scene at the mall, Benjy and Ted flee from Martin’s thugs in a dramatic high-speed chase, showcasing the adrenaline-pumping essence of their criminal escapade.

Tragedy strikes when Ted discovers Malcolm has been murdered, a retaliatory act that leads him to hunt down and kill Frank at a nightclub, escalating the tension. Amidst all this chaos, a conference call reveals the further treachery of corrupt police Lieutenant Curtis Loos, played by Arlen Dean Snyder, who was originally tasked with eliminating the detective. This shocking betrayal puts Benjy’s life at grave risk when Loos attempts to kill him, but Ted, in an act of desperation, saves his friend by running Loos over.

Later, Benjy arrives at Bracey’s home to reveal the truth about Loos, only to find himself thrown out by a disbelieving Bracey, who suggests they discuss this matter later. Unbeknownst to Benjy, Ted has been watching from the shadows, a clear indicator of the looming danger within his newfound friendship. The next day proves catastrophic when Benjy’s cover is blown during a surprise visit from his uncle. Racing back to Bracey’s house only to discover Ted has murdered him, Benjy irons out the ultimate plan to confront Ted.

With a final, heart-stopping rendezvous at the mall, Benjy attempts to arrest Ted for the string of murders. However, Ted refuses to surrender peacefully, which ignites an intense gunfight that leaves Benjy wounded but resolute in his pursuit of justice. In a tragic conclusion, he manages to shoot and kill Ted, leaving a trail of devastation in the wake of a friendship that was never meant to be.

“You don’t have to do this, Ted.”
