Apeksha “Apu” Shivlal Sahay (Riya Shukla) is an unmotivated student who has somehow reached her SSC year, even though the idea of pursuing further studies doesn’t excite her. She faces hurdles in mathematics alongside her friends Sweety (Neha Prajapati) and Pintu (Prashant Tiwari). Her single mother, Chanda Sahay (Swara Bhaskar), a high-school dropout, works four low-paying jobs, including one as a maid for Dr. Diwan (Ratna Pathak Shah).

When Chanda laments the struggle of supporting Apu’s education, Dr. Diwan suggests bringing in a math tutor to help. The condition is clear: Apu must raise her grades to qualify for a tuition discount. Apu resents the plan, insisting that her fate is to work as a maid because her mother can’t afford college. With Dr. Diwan’s encouragement, Chanda enrolls in Apu’s school to learn math and ends up tutoring Apu herself. This intrudes on Apu’s privacy and pride, and she often ridicules her mother. Chanda’s effort pays off as she befriends her daughter’s classmates and earns the respect of teachers, even enlisting the help of her shy classmate Amar (Vishal Nath) to grasp math concepts, using mind maps that Amar guides her to create.

The path toward better grades is rocky. Apu’s progress remains inconsistent, and Chanda promises to drop out of school if Apu can beat her score on the next math test. With Amar’s support and regular study, Apu finally posts a commendable score. Yet the moment Chanda sees that Apu is not fully invested in continuing school, she retracts her promise. As Chanda dedicates more time to schooling, she loses one of her jobs and must pick up a night shift at a restaurant. Apu misreads the situation and believes Chanda has begun soliciting, leading her to steal her mother’s savings to buy food and new clothes. The blow is devastating for Chanda, who sinks into depression when Apu admits the money wasn’t earned through hard work.

In the aftermath, Chanda stops attending school herself and continues to work, holding onto the dream that Apu might one day join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Her faith is partly inspired by a compassionate District Collector (Sanjay Suri), who models what dedication can do. Meanwhile, Amar explains to Apu the reality of her mother’s new job at the restaurant, which Apu had misread as solicitation. Overwhelmed with remorse, Apu rediscovers her commitment to education and persuades Chanda to re-enroll. The two push through the remainder of their SSC year together.

Years later, Apu stands before the Union Public Service Commission for the Civil Services Examination interview, having passed her early exams. When asked what motivated her to pursue the IAS, she credits her mother as the driving force who now tutors struggling math students for free. She also makes it clear that she no longer wants to be a maid, signaling a lasting change in their lives.
