Nikki, Wild Dog of the North 1961

In 1899, Nikki and his master, Andre Dupas, travel by canoe through the rugged Canadian Rockies, a journey that blends danger, loyalty, and unlikely friendship. As their voyage unfolds, Nikki encounters Neewa, a young black bear cub whose mother was slain by a grizzly named Makoos. Andre Dupas weakens the boundary between predator and companion by tying the two animals together, placing them in the canoe, and steering toward the rushing rapids. When the pair are separated from him, they must learn to survive on their own in a world that is quick to test them. With winter looming, Neewa goes into hibernation while Nikki roams alone, stealing bait from traps to stay alive. After witnessing Nikki mature into a formidable dog who can kill a wolf despite the trap, Lebeau decides to train him as a fighting dog, even though pit-fighting is illegal.
