Nightmare Castle 1965

Inside a secluded castle, the home laboratory of Stephen Arrowsmith, Paul Müller, hums with experiments as his wife Muriel Arrowsmith, Barbara Steele, enjoys the estate’s comforts. Stephen walks in on Muriel in a charged moment with the gardener, David, [Rik Battaglia], and the confrontation erupts into violence: he lunges with a hot poker, disfiguring David and splashing Muriel with acid. Before he can finish them with an electric shock, a cruel twist is revealed—the estate does not belong to Stephen as Muriel’s heir; it has been willed to her stepsister Jenny Arrowsmith, Barbara Steele, a mentally unstable figure who has long lurked in the castle’s shadow. Stephen rips out David’s and Muriel’s hearts and hides them in an urn, then uses their blood to rejuvenate his aging servant, Solange, [Helga Liné].

Sometime later, Stephen marries Jenny, hoping the revived Solange will push her further into madness. Jenny is haunted by nightmares—the sound of beating hearts and Muriel’s voice urging murder—and she grows certain that supernatural forces stalk the halls. To treat Jenny, Stephen brings Dr. Derek Joyce, [Marino Masé], to the manor, a move that only deepens the sense of a occult threat. Joyce uncovers the hidden hearts of Muriel and David, and the living dead begin to drift through the estate as ghosts. In the climactic turn, Muriel’s spirit returns to torment the living, while David drains Solange’s lifeblood, reducing Solange to a skeletal ruin. Joyce then destroys the disembodied hearts and leaves the castle with Jenny, stepping into a future shadowed by the nightmarish memories they’ve carried out of the past.
