During World War II, a captured German spy is executed at the Tower of London, and the fate of Professor Hansen, a refugee Swedish scientist in Britain, remains sealed. Hansen is believed to be unwittingly passing atomic-bomb intelligence to Germany through the neutral Irish Free State, a dangerous link British intelligence is determined to sever.
Two intelligence officers, Captain Grant Robert Newton and Captain Wilson Lawrence O’Madden, travel incognito on the overnight ferry to Dublin. They observe the German contact, Keitel Herbert Lom, and their suspicion centers on lawyer Paul Faber Raymond Lovell. Grant manages to obtain a clerical position in Faber’s London office under a false identity, presenting himself as an ex-army officer who has gone AWOL, and he becomes entangled in a string of illegal tasks coerced by Faber. These include a marriage of convenience to Marion Decker Muriel Pavlow, an Austrian woman anxious to secure British nationality, as well as the theft of some radioactive items from a docks warehouse.
The trail sharpens as Grant, along with Captain Tony Hunter Guy Middleton and the police, tracks the scheme to the fictional Devon village of Hunstable, and then to a cliff-edge mansion where Hansen is being shielded. A tense showdown unfolds in a sea cave beneath the mansion, leaving the authorities triumphant.
Grant is directed to a room where his wife, Marion, is being held; she, fearing an intruder, breaks a vase over his head. The scene culminates with her kneeling beside him, uttering the quiet, private plea, “Oh David.”
