What is the name of the woman's soul that haunts the village?
Read the complete plot summary of Nayagi, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
Nayaki centers on the lingering soul of a woman named Gayathri, a presence haunting a village since the 1980s. The area is effectively shut off by the Government of India because locals keep vanishing while touring the village, and the mystery of why this spirit has clung to the place for over three decades drives the film. The setting builds an atmosphere of quiet fear, as villagers exchange whispered legends about unseen watchers and unexplained occurrences that occur after sunset.
The story opens with Gayathri dreaming of becoming a heroine and, in a chilling moment, killing someone. The scene shifts to a cafe where Sanjay, a director, is sent to meet his rich would-be-fiancée. He meets a girl who isn’t rich but is fooled by him, and he leads her to an old bungalow with clearly wrong intentions. But the ghostly figure of Gayathri appears on camera, scares them, and possesses the girl, turning a private moment of deception into a haunting spectacle that unsettles everyone present.
As the plot unfolds, Sanjay encounters the soul of Gayathri’s father, who begins to explain why the haunting fuels her anger toward men who abuse or neglect women. The backstory reveals that Gayathri longed to become an actress like Sridevi from childhood. When a director misbehaved with her, a camera man named Yogender stepped in to help her pursue her dreams. She grows to care for him, but her father discovers Yogender’s true nature, and Yogender rapes and brutally kills Gayathri and her father. In a twist of fate, both Gayathri and her father survive as ghosts, and the Goddess Bhadrakali possesses Gayathri. With this power, she kills Yogender in vengeance and swears to destroy any man who harms a woman, making her a guardian in the most terrifying sense.
In the present, Sanjay feels guilty and hatches a plan to present Gayathri as a heroine on screen. Gayathri enters another body, and when another director behaves the same way, she answers with a decisive slap. The culmination sees the release of Gayathri’s film, and in an interview, Sanjay asserts that whenever there is wrongdoing she will return—a spectral promise that lingers beyond the credits and leaves a chilling implication for any future abuse.
