Mohandas [Mammootty] is the son of Chathukutty, a police constable, who dreams of seeing his son rise to a sub-inspector’s post. Mohandas, however, prefers a quieter life as a teacher in a tutorial college, and he is a coward by nature. He even schemes to trip the written exam for SI selection, but his father leverages his influence to secure his placement and then emotionally blackmails him to join the force. This push into a world of power and danger marks the start of a conflict between personal fear and public duty, as Mohandas grapples with whether to stay true to himself or fulfill his father’s ambitious expectations.

After completing his training, Mohandas is posted to a village police station where Ananthan Nair [M G Soman] stands as the de facto king. Ananthan Nair controls major businesses and maintains close ties with the police upper echelons, using these connections to fuel a range of corrupt activities, including bootlegging. He also exploits the region’s poor farmers, weaving a web of influence that makes real justice hard to come by. The town’s uneasy balance of power begins to tilt as Ananthan Nair’s grip grows stronger, and the everyday lives of ordinary people start to feel the weight of his schemes.

When Balan [Suresh Gopi] dares to oppose Ananthan Nair, the consequences are swift and brutal. Balan is beaten by Ananthan Nair’s goons, and Balan’s wife is raped, an atrocity that drives her to end her own life. The violence exposes the depth of the corruption and cruelty at the heart of the village’s power structure, underscoring the peril that confronts anyone who resists the dominant force. The incident also becomes a turning point for Mohandas, who must confront his own fears in the face of such brutality.

Upon arriving to take charge, Mohandas initially sides with Ananthan Nair, overwhelmed by fear and the complex web of loyalties around him. This moment of weakness is a stark contrast to the duty he is meant to uphold, and it tests his conscience in a profound way. Yet there is a glimmer of hope: Damodharan [Sreenivasan], another schoolteacher, offers support and guidance, helping Mohandas to find courage. With Damodharan’s help, Mohandas gradually overcomes his fear and begins to stand up for the population, shifting from silence to action and moving to curb Ananthan Nair’s abuses.

As the story unfolds, the mood in the village shifts from complicity and fear to resistance and resolve. Mohandas’s transformation is gradual, shaped by the realization that true authority comes from protecting the vulnerable and upholding justice rather than bowing to intimidation and corrupt power. In this evolving struggle, the latter part of the tale emphasizes solidarity among ordinary people and the moral courage required to challenge entrenched corruption.
