My Sunshine 2024

Takuya, a young boy who often seems detached during baseball and hockey practices, finds new passion when he watches Sakura, a girl practicing figure skating. After experiencing an exhilarating moment during a hockey match where he plays as the goalie, he becomes enchanted with the art of figure skating. His attempts to mimic the beautiful spirals and spins he sees lead to recognition from Arakawa, Sakura’s coach and a former competitive figure skater. Impressed with Takuya’s potential, Arakawa offers him his old figure skates and begins to provide him with lessons at no charge.

In the meantime, Arakawa visits a gas station where his partner, Igarashi, works. At home, Igarashi notices how much happier Arakawa has become since he started coaching Takuya. As Takuya makes progress, Arakawa proposes a partnership between Takuya and Sakura for ice dancing, a suggestion that initially leaves Sakura uncertain, as she has been trained for women’s singles figure skating under Arakawa’s guidance. Together, they embark on learning the Dutch waltz with the goal of participating in the upcoming badge test. The three grow closer during practices at a frozen lake, and soon Takuya and Sakura successfully master the pattern dance.

However, when Sakura unexpectedly sees Arakawa and Igarashi sharing a popsicle in his car, she privately confronts Arakawa, questioning his motivations for coaching Takuya and expressing her displeasure. During the badge test, both Takuya and Arakawa wait eagerly for Sakura’s arrival, but she doesn’t show up. Shortly thereafter, Sakura’s mother intervenes, terminating their lessons with Arakawa, insisting that Sakura will continue figure skating but not under his coaching, which also includes a warning for him to stay away.

After the fallout, Takuya goes back to hockey, while Sakura resumes her singles skates. A conversation between Igarashi and Takuya reveals Igarashi’s struggles with his father’s business at the gas station, while he is now free to coach elsewhere, as he has no current students at the local rink. With the arrival of spring, Takuya is spotted walking home from school adorned in an oversized middle school uniform while carrying his baseball gear. Arakawa drives by and greets him, suggesting they return to the thawed lake where they once practiced together. As they engage in a game of catch, Takuya notices boxes in Arakawa’s car trunk, which leads him to inquire about Arakawa’s departure plans. Arakawa responds uncertainly, and when Takuya mentions returning the gifted figure skates, Arakawa insists they are a present to keep.

In the closing moments, Takuya is seen making his way to the rink while clutching the figure skates. Coincidentally, he crosses paths with Sakura, who has just finished practicing her single program to a melody of Clair de lune. The film ends as Takuya approaches Sakura, hinting at a conversation waiting to unfold.
