My Giant 1998

Sammy Kamin, a struggling talent agent, travels to Romania on business after splitting from his wife. When his young client fires him, Sammy’s plans falter, and a roadside crash changes the course of his life. He is rescued by a giant Romanian man, Max Zamphirescu, who saves him in a dramatic, larger-than-life moment that makes Sammy believe he’s witnessed something divine. When he regains consciousness, he finds himself in a monastery, and learns that Max has carried him there after Max’s own extraordinary past—raised in that monastery following adoption because of his unusual height.

As Sammy recovers, he begins to see a potential star in Max and starts plotting how to bring him into the film world. He hatches a plan built around Max’s longing to reconnect with a long-lost love, Lilliana Rotaru, whom he hopes to find in Gallup, New Mexico. The plan leads to a first taste of cinema for Max: a villain role, which goes awry when he becomes so inebriated that he ends up vomiting on the film’s protagonist—Sammy’s former client—yet the scene somehow makes it into the final cut, proving how unpredictable show business can be.

In his bid to shape Max’s career, Sammy even approaches the famed actor Steven Seagal with the idea of making Max the body of a new kind of villain. Seagal initially resists, believing there’s another performer who could fill the role, but his stance shifts after he hears a Shakespearean-style monologue performed by Max, revealing a surprising depth to the giant’s talent.

Tragedy shadows the story when medical exams reveal that Max has a heart condition too severe to transplant—his heart is simply too large to replace. Faced with this hard truth, Sammy intensifies the effort to bring Max to Lilliana, but she rejects the invitation. Undeterred, Sammy convinces his wife, Serena Kamin, to step into the part of Lilliana so Max can have a final moment with his beloved before time runs out.

Max expresses a simple longing—a kiss, a last moment with Lilliana, a chance to say goodbye. Yet the bond between Sammy and his wife becomes the real turning point: they realize they are still deeply in love, and their son needs them back together. The film closes on a high note as Sammy helps secure a three-picture movie deal for Max and even a TV series, marking a triumphant if bittersweet peak before the final act.

In the end, Sammy returns Max home to Romania, where the giant of a man hesitantly re-enters his old life and reunites with his family.
