Read the complete plot summary of My Name Is Bruce, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
In the charming town of Gold Lick, Oregon, where nostalgia collides with chaos, two friends, Jeff (Taylor Sharpe) and Clayton (Logan Martin), make their way to a local cemetery to meet the enigmatic girls, Big Debbie (Ariel Badenhop) and Little Debbie (Ali Akay). However, their innocent rendezvous inadvertently unleashes the powerful Chinese god of the dead, Guan Di (James Peck), resulting in a whirlwind of destruction as he swiftly eliminates Clayton and the Debbies, while Jeff makes a frantic escape.
At the same time, the legendary B-movie star, Bruce Campbell](/actor/bruce-campbell), is busy finishing filming for Cave Alien II. His agent, Mills Toddner (Ted Raimi), has promised him an unforgettable birthday surprise. Unknown to Bruce, Jeff seizes this chance to kidnap his idol, hoping that Campbell’s renowned bravery can rescue Gold Lick from the chaos unleashed by Guan Di.
Upon his arrival in Gold Lick, Bruce is blissfully unaware of the dire circumstances, thinking it’s merely part of a film. He finds a warm welcome from Jeff’s mother, Kelly (Grace Thorsen), who is initially confused by Bruce’s presence. As the townsfolk convene at the local gun shop, preparations begin for a confrontation with Guan Di in the ominous nearby woods.
Throughout their harrowing adventure, an Italian painter (Ted Raimi) persistently repaints the town’s population sign, which changes each time someone meets a grim fate – even his own. Eventually, Bruce realizes that the madness is painfully real and, in a dramatic turn, decides to flee Gold Lick, leaving Jeff, Kelly, and the townsfolk in disappointment.
Isolated in his caravan, Bruce finds himself alienated from everyone, including his loyal dog. His ex-wife, Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), has filed a restraining order against him, while Mills’ so-called “birthday surprise” turns out to be a singing prostitute named Kasey (Janelle Farber). In the aftermath, Jeff defiantly declares to Bruce that he will face Guan Di alone, spurring Bruce to return.
With Kasey escorting him back to Gold Lick, Bruce faces hostility from the townspeople, prompting him to reach out and reconcile with Kelly. Their united goal becomes clear: to rescue Jeff from the clutches of Guan Di. They embark on a daring mission to the ancient cemetery, setting explosives in the mausoleum and devising a plan to draw Guan Di in using one of Jeff’s cardboard cut-outs featuring Bruce’s likeness. However, Guan Di proves resistant to their ruse, forcing Bruce and Kelly to reevaluate their tactics.
In a breathtaking twist, Bruce makes an ultimate sacrifice, using bean curd as bait for Guan Di, and detonates the explosives, emerging from the debris unscathed. As he recuperates, he carefully rehangs a medallion on the mausoleum wall, hoping to appease the restless spirit of Guan Di. This unexpected gesture brings Guan Di back to life, only to reveal that the entire series of events has been nothing more than a cinematic concoction.
In a moment of vulnerability, Bruce and Kelly share a passionate kiss, changing the dynamic of their relationship. As the credits roll, Bruce finds himself in a playful argument with Ted Raimi about the predictability of the film’s conclusion. However, he boldly chooses to eschew conventions, framing the ending as a delightful celebration of love and redemption. Fast forward to a time when Bruce and Kelly are blissfully married, residing in a charming home with their son, Jeff, who has successfully gained admission into Harvard University.
As the story draws to a close, Bruce muses, “What could be a more satisfying conclusion than that?” However, his moment of triumph is abruptly interrupted as Guan Di ominously reappears, locking its menacing gaze onto Bruce. The screen fades to black, leaving the audience to ponder the new terrors that await our unlikely hero.
