As the Great War opens, 17-year-old Jack Kipling — the son of the celebrated author Rudyard Kipling — declares his intent to join the Royal Navy and fight the Germans, a bold move that stirs strong feelings in the family. His father supports the decision and arranges several attempts to enlist in both the Army and the Navy, hoping to see his son proven in battle. Yet when Jack’s eyesight fails the medical, both he and his father are devastated, facing an uncertain future and the weight of family expectations.
