In the vibrant city of Chicago, Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos is a 30-year-old woman who finds herself entangled in the lively and sometimes overwhelming dynamics of her large Greek family. Her father, Gus, is particularly eager for her to marry and start a family of her own. Despite living comfortably with her parents and working in their restaurant, “Dancing Zorba’s”, she yearns for the freedom and independence that comes with adulthood.

One fateful day, while working at the family eatery, Toula encounters Ian Miller, a teacher who becomes the object of her affection. Driven by her newfound crush, she proposes to her parents that she enroll in a local college to study computers. However, Gus misinterprets this desire as a sign that she wants to leave him, prompting her mother, Maria, to reassure both Toula and Gus, ultimately persuading him to support her educational aspirations.

As the weeks roll by, Toula transforms herself, shedding her old image by swapping her bulky glasses for contact lenses, revamping her hairstyle, and adopting more fashionable attire that highlights her figure. Inspired by the prospect of a class on computers and tourism, she tells her aunt, Voula, about her intentions to use the skills gained from the class to help at Voula’s travel agency. Despite the obstacles, the couple continues to see each other. Ian, in his quest for acceptance, even proposes, and Toula joyfully agrees. In an attempt to weary Gus’s discontent, Maria argues that Gus must respect Toula’s choice. Yet, Gus remains unconvinced as Ian isn’t Greek Orthodox, prompting Ian to agree to be baptized to ease tensions.

The wedding preparations devolve into chaos as Toula’s family takes over, fashioning unflattering bridesmaid dresses and mislabeling invites, all while Ian’s conservative parents are thrown into the jubilant, exuberantly loud affair of a Greek family. The cultural differences are stark, and Toula grows anxious about her father’s feelings towards Ian.

At the wedding reception, Gus delivers a sincere speech celebrating the union, highlighting that their differing backgrounds should not stand in the way of love. He and Maria surprise the couple by revealing they’ve purchased a house for them. As both families unite on the dance floor, Toula reflects on her loud, quirky family—their strange antics notwithstanding, they are a source of unconditional love and support.
