The movie is told through various points of view in a semi-documentary style. Generosa Rand [Poppy Montgomery] is a struggling artist who also sells real estate, and when client Ted Ammon [David Sutcliffe] fails to show up, she goes to confront him. They soon fall in love, get married, and are happy for several years during which they adopt twins Alexa Ammon [Aislinn Paul] and Greg Ammon [Munro Chambers]. As time goes on, Generosa’s gravity-defying optimism begins to tilt toward paranoia, and she becomes increasingly convinced that Ted is unfaithful and deceitful. Her suspicions fuel a bitter, highly publicized divorce battle in which she fights for custody of the twins, ownership of their Hamptons home, and a claim on Ted’s wealth.
Unable to reach a peaceful accord, Generosa and the kids stay at a hotel where she meets her contractor Danny Pelosi [Shawn Christian]. The affair with Danny deepens as he pushes her to hold out for money from Ted, steering her toward a new, more desperate plan. After Ted is murdered, Generosa inherits the entire estate; three months later, she and Danny marry. In a drastic move to keep the children close to her, she withholds the truth about Ted’s death, telling the kids that Ted died by suicide after drinking alcohol and taking pills.
Generosa and Danny soon come under police scrutiny. Meanwhile, Generosa learns she is dying of breast cancer, adding a race against time to the algebra of lies surrounding the case. Danny seeks custody of the twins, but Generosa resists, arguing that he spent her money and lived a party lifestyle. She revises her will to alter the distributions: Danny would receive about $2,000,000, the housekeeper and nanny Kaye would get $1,000,000, and the remainder would go to the children. Kaye is granted custody of the children, while Greg is sent away to private school and Alexa remains with Generosa.
After Generosa’s death, Danny is arrested for Ted’s murder. In 2004, he is found guilty and sentenced to 25 years to life. The film’s layered structure and the shifting perspectives leave viewers weighing motive, truth, and the elusive line between devotion and desire, all while the courtroom drama and personal betrayals unfold against a backdrop of wealth, status, and the high-stakes world of a long-simmering crime.
