Murder in Coweta County 1983

The film centers around two main figures in rural Georgia, Sheriff Lamar Potts of Coweta County, Georgia, and John Wallace of Meriwether County, Georgia, who rules a vast estate known as The Kingdom. This backdrop sets the stage for a story about power, jurisdiction, and the lengths people will go to protect or challenge the order of things.

Wilson Turner is a poor white tenant sharecropper who loses his standing after Wallace dismisses him, even though Turner had permission to run a liquor errand. Turner is forced to leave his home, along with his wife and child, and he cannot harvest his crops on his own land. In a desperate bid for revenge, he steals one of Wallace’s prized Guernsey cows. Turner is subsequently captured in a neighboring county and brought back to Meriwether County to face Wallace.

Turner’s arrest is tainted by politics and fear when Sheriff Hardy Collier releases him from jail for a supposed lack of evidence. Wallace and three of his men lie in wait outside the jail, and Turner realizes too late that he’s been set up. He tries to flee in his truck, but Wallace and his gang pursue him under the pretext that Turner is an escaped prisoner. The chase crosses the county line into Coweta County, and when Turner runs out of gasoline, Wallace confronts him and kills him with a pistol-whip.

Determined to see justice served, Sheriff Potts presses forward to build a case against Wallace, but he must gather solid evidence to prove the charge. Wallace’s two field hands help burn Turner’s body, a stark display of arrogance that underscores the divide between those who wield power and those who fear it. An informant eventually tips Potts to the crime, and the two field hands agree to testify at Wallace’s trial.

The confrontation ends with Wallace receiving the death penalty and being executed in the electric chair. The film’s credits note that Potts would go on to serve as Sheriff of Coweta County for 32 years, sealing his legacy in the very system he sought to uphold.
