Mr. Stitch 1995

Dr. Rue Wakeman [Rutger Hauer] leads a secret project that brings a creature, Subject 3, to life by stitching together skin and organs from multiple men and women. This being has no real memories, yet it can speak and eventually identifies as male, choosing the name Lazarus for himself. The creature enters into a tense, uneasy collaboration with Nia Peeples as Dr. Elizabeth English, who becomes the main conduit for his questions and dreams. Lazarus’s unusual consciousness leads him to press for reading material, asking first for the Bible and Frankenstein; at first only the Bible is provided, and later a copy of Frankenstein arrives, bearing an inscription addressed to Nia Peeples from Ron Perlman, the project’s former head, Doctor Frederick Texarian. This keeps Lazarus tethered to memories that seem to belong to the minds that supplied his parts, deepening the mystery around his origins and the people who created him.

As Lazarus grows more distrustful of Dr. Wakeman, he resolves to escape the facility where he is kept. He crawls through the ventilation shafts, overhearing the doctors plot to terminate him so they can push forward with the next stage of their research. He seizes control of a situation by carjacking Dr. Al Jacobs [Taylor Negron] and slipping away from the security forces in a tense car chase. His escape takes him to the home of Clay Gardener [Al Sapienza] and Thorn Gardener [Luke Stratte-McClure], the father and son who contributed tissues to his body, where he broadcasts their thoughts to the widow Sandy Gardener [Valarie Trapp], weaving a chilling link between the living and the pieces that make him. He also seeks out Dr. Elizabeth English and conveys the thoughts of Doctor Frederick Texarian, revealing the buried memories that haunt the project’s past.

Lazarus returns to the facility with a grim purpose: to halt the experiments on Subject 4 by destroying the data that would advance that research. He unleashes VX nerve gas in the room housing Subject 4, then kills General Hardcastle [Michael Harris], the project’s overseer, along with Subject 4 itself, before ending his own life. From outside the room, Dr. Elizabeth English watches in tears as the catastrophe unfolds. In the aftermath, she leaves the facility, and the final image hints at a new chapter: stitching together a fresh creature, continuing a cycle of creation and consequence that has followed the team from the beginning.
