The beautiful Julia Thistlewaite attends the opera with the season’s most eligible bachelor, Mr. Jeremy Malcolm. When her attempt to impress him falls flat, she becomes the target of sharp mockery and a caricature that spreads through society. Desperate to understand what rubbed him the wrong way, she enlists her cousin, the Lord Cassidy, a flippant and unreliable figure, to uncover the truth. The scoop slips out, and Julia is instantly offended, setting in motion a tangled scheme that will pull Selina Dalton into the center of a revenge plot.
To exact her revenge, Julia invites her friend Selina Dalton to London and trains her to appear as the perfect potential wife. Selina, initially reluctant, is swept into the plan as she starts to see how far Julia is willing to go to prove a point about Malcolm’s supposed indifference. On the night she is set to meet Malcolm, Selina brushes past him in the orangery; a chance encounter sparks a conversation about philosophy, and the two discover an immediate, undeniable pull toward each other. When they are formally introduced, Malcolm invites Selina to the museum, where he argues that his connection with Julia was weaker than society believes, casting doubt on the efficacy of Julia’s schemes.
During their visit, they unexpectedly cross Captain Ossery, a figure with whom Selina shares prior familiarity from Bath, which adds another layer to the emotional tangle. The following day, Ossery makes his own move, inviting Selina to walk with him and announcing his intention to court her, convinced by an aunt’s final letter that they would be a suitable match. Malcolm continues his pursuit of Selina, while Julia, aided by her scheming, continues to present Selina as the ideal match for him. The web thickens when Julia and Selina accidentally encounter Selina’s vulgar cousin, Gertie Covington, and Julia claims her as a relative, hoping to blur the lines further.
Malcolm privately tells Selina that he is glad she isn’t related to someone as crass as Gertie, a confession that stings Selina when she learns the truth. Upon discovering the deception, Malcolm apologizes and even extends an invitation to Gertie to join him and the rest of the party at his country estate, where he intends to propose to Selina. Julia decides that Malcolm must be falling for Selina and contemplates a final rejection, but Selina speaks up—she has changed her mind about the plan, convinced that Malcolm is honorable and will not hurt Julia.
The masquerade ball becomes the stage for a dramatic turn. Julia has her maid call Selina away and lock her in a room, then sends a message to Malcolm, asking him to meet as Selina. When Malcolm proposes, Julia rejects him and flees, only to be confronted by Selina, Malcolm, and Ossery. Julia reveals that her hurt from Malcolm’s supposed rejection still lingers and that Selina was part of her scheme, which leads Malcolm to feel betrayed and to reject Selina as well. The next day, guilt and tension hang heavy as Julia contemplates another scheme to reunite the pair, but Ossery intervenes, confessing his own feelings for Julia and urging restraint.
Malcolm and Selina eventually find themselves alone in the garden, where Malcolm accuses Selina of trying to trap him into an engagement. Infuriated, she wishes him luck with his list and departs. After Julia offers a public apology, Selina decides to leave for home. In a final twist, Malcolm’s mother reveals she was the mastermind behind the garden encounter, pressing her son to pursue separation. Chasing after Selina, Malcolm returns with a new, more inclusive list of what he seeks in a wife, the sole and final line reading simply: “Selina Dalton.”
