An elderly moth scientist discovers a fragment of a moonshell that falls from the moon and lands in a tranquil pond. From that shell, a tiny lunar bee named Moonzy emerges, beginning a journey that will unfold across wild natural terrain and gaze toward the distant moon.
A year passes, and Moonzy visits the moth with two young friends, a grasshopper named Flip and two caterpillars named Woopie and Poopsie. The four come to inspect the moth’s shell, now a kind of living memory for them. A mischief-filled quarrel erupts between Woopie, Poopsie, and the moth, pushing Moonzy and the others to flee. The chase heats up quickly, and the moth pursues fiercely, launching sleeping pellets toward Moonzy and her companions, sending them into a deep, dreamless sleep.
They awaken on a leaf that rides a slow river of water, drifting toward a distant mountain. Moonzy discovers her shell resting among what she initially takes for stones, and the friends set their hearts on reclaiming it. When they slip inside what seems to be a rocky landscape, they discover it is actually a cluster of mushrooms, and Woopie and Poopsie start nibbling at them with delighted curiosity. Moonzy and Flip pause to sample pollen atop a flower, while the moth appears again, swooping in to seize Moonzy’s shell. In a swift moment, Woopie seizes the moth’s spitball stick and fires a shot, sending the moth tumbling into a harmless sleep.
Their journey toward the mountain takes a turn as Moonzy feeds Woopie and Poopsie strawberries, a small act of care that keeps their spirits up. The moth tracks them, but the group manages to escape by riding a dragonfly. A rough tumble follows when they crash into a branch, and the dragonfly carries the moth away with them. Moonzy and her friends wake as the dragonfly drifts on, and a scramble ensues as Flip accidentally releases Moonzy’s shell, sending it rolling toward a hidden hole in the ground. Woopie and Poopsie work together to pull Moonzy down into the hole with a weed, but Flip’s sudden intervention changes the course of events, and Moonzy is pulled back to safety, reclaiming her shell.
Approaching the mountain, a purple centipede emerges from the same hole and gives chase. The group finds shelter in a cave, but the centipede tracks them down and follows. They eventually exit the hole, only to have a giant rock topple over and bury the centipede beneath it, blocking the danger momentarily.
Moonzy prepares to take flight toward the moon, but Woopie and Poopsie interrupt her plans. The centipede tracks them to the mountaintop, and the group tries to hide as the centipede closes in. Moonzy’s shell glows with an inner light as she dodges and makes a break for safety. In a final tense moment, the moth resurfaces from a nearby hole and releases a bag of sleeping pellets that lands on Moonzy’s moonshell, sending the centipede into a deep slumber.
With the danger averted, the group gathers on the mountaintop. Moonzy’s tummy glows softly, and she rises toward the moon, finally reuniting with her mother in the night sky.
Back on Earth, Granny Annie and General Stringer—Moonzy’s grandparents—watch with quiet sadness as Moonzy departs for the moon, while Woopie and Poopsie continue to practice their fledgling flight. The journey then circles back home as Moonzy glides back toward the pond, where she reunites with her friends once again, bridging two worlds through courage, curiosity, and the enduring bonds of friendship.
