Flamboyant television financial expert Lee Gates (George Clooney) is right in the thick of things as he hosts his show, Money Monster. Just a day prior, the stock of IBIS Clear Capital took a shocking dive, apparently due to a catastrophic glitch in a trading algorithm responsible for managing the company’s portfolio, resulting in a staggering loss of $800 million for investors. Lee had intended to interview Walt Camby (Dominic West), the CEO of IBIS, for a friendly discussion about the crash. However, Camby had flown off on a business trip to Geneva unexpectedly, leaving his chief communications officer, Diane Lester (portrayed by Caitriona Balfe), to join Lee via video chat for the segment instead.

Despite this setback, Lee is convinced that Camby is a capable leader who has a strong track record of turning profits and that the IBIS stock will rebound shortly. Yet, as he navigates through an overwhelming amount of data and delivers recommendations to his audience, it becomes clear that many of his insights are not rooted in comprehensive analysis, but rather informed by whispers, gossip, and informal discussions.

While the show is airing, a distraught deliveryman enters the studio, brandishing a gun and taking Lee hostage. This man is Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell), a victim of the stock crash who invested his entire life savings—$60,000—based on Lee’s endorsement of IBIS. Angered and desperate for accountability, Kyle accuses Lee of promoting the high-frequency trading model and misleading investors, claiming that Lee had assured them their investments were safer than a savings account.

Kyle demands that the live camera feeds be turned back on, threatening to take drastic action if his orders are disobeyed. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts), the show’s director, is secretly coordinating efforts to resolve the hostage crisis while communicating discreetly with Lee via an earpiece, unbeknownst to Kyle.

As tensions escalate and police surround the building, Captain Marcus Powell (Giancarlo Esposito) leads the operation to reclaim control over the situation. While Kyle’s demeanor hardens, declaring he is prepared to die if he doesn’t receive the answers he seeks, Patty strategizes with Lee on how to defuse the situation while searching for Camby to provide the explanation that the desperate investor demands.

From an off-site location, Diane hesitates to step into the chaos but ultimately determines she cannot remain uninvolved. She contacts a programmer in Seoul, Won Joon (Aaron Yoo), who reveals that the trading algorithm could not have executed the massive position loss without human intervention. As Lee goes live, appealing to his audience for support in rebuying IBIS stock, his pleas seem fruitless, deepening the crisis.

Frustrated by the unfolding events, Kyle is connected with his pregnant girlfriend, Molly (Emily Meade), but their conversation devolves after she hears about his financial ruin. Meanwhile, as the True Crime unfolding on live television captivates viewers everywhere, the urgency for justice grows.

After receiving critical information that Camby was not in Geneva, but in Johannesburg, Lee, Kyle and the network’s crew move towards Federal Hall to confront him. A thrilling climax ensues as the group engages with Camby, revealing that he orchestrated a corrupt plan involving bribes to secure a lucrative investment, which was ultimately disrupted by a labor strike.

In a gripping turn of events, Camby is compelled to admit his wrongdoings on air under the threat posed to him by Kyle and ultimately faces the dire consequences of his actions. Despite the chaos, the dust begins to settle on the aftermath, with the SEC stepping in to investigate IBIS. Meanwhile, Lee and Patty find solace in the fact that their colleague, Ron, who sustained injuries during the confrontation, will survive. The events, fraught with tension and deception, underline the disarray in the financial world and the impacts of unchecked corporate greed.
