On Christmas Eve, Maria Porter, a belly dancer in a carnival side show in the Mexican quarter of Los Angeles, is unhappily married to Dick Porter, a carnival barker with a criminal streak. In a bid to drum up business, the pair attempt to rob an undercover policeman disguised as a lecherous drunk; when the officer announces that they are under arrest, they flee. [Maria Porter] sees an abandoned infant in the Christ child’s manger as the crowd swells near a church, and, seizing the moment, she lifts the baby and carries it back to her boardinghouse as a clever disguise.

To escape the police, Dick Porter leaves Maria to fend for herself and disappears. The deserted Maria is helped by Dr. Miles and her landlady, Mrs. Herman, and soon finds herself unable to part with the infant. She tries to support herself by taking a sewing job so she can stay home with the baby, but the money never seems to be enough to cover the mounting bills. When [Mrs. Herman] urges her to return to dancing, Maria visits Pepito’s nightclub to ask for work, hoping that a new routine might steady her life.

There she meets Jim Foreman, a lonely, recently divorced rancher who overhears Maria’s plea for a chance at employment and, moved by her predicament, offers her a drink and a listening ear. Their connection deepens into a tender courtship, and with Jim’s encouragement, Maria discovers a surprising talent as a fashion designer. Jim grows fond of her and envisions a future together, but the thought of revealing her muddled past gives Maria pause. Just as she wrestles with confessing everything, Dick Porter returns and proposes to exit her life for a price, shaking the fragile ground she’s built.

To prevent Dick from leveraging his way into Jim’s life, Maria pretends that she still loves the man who caused her so much pain. In a cruel turn, Dick informs the welfare department that Maria is an unfit mother, threatening the fragile stability she’s found. Yet the tale moves toward a hopeful conclusion: Dick is killed during an attempted robbery, and Jim Foreman comes back into Maria’s life, ready to care for her and the baby. The film resolves with a sense of renewed purpose and a rebuilt family, anchored by love, resilience, and the quiet strength of those who believed in Maria when the road looked darkest.
