In a film that threads together two eerie, cautionary tales, the opening segments present Merlin’s magical interventions as something that seems harmless at first glance, only to reveal a more troubling and unpredictable core as the stories unfold.

The first story follows Jonathan Cooper, a respected but abrasive columnist, and his wife Madeline Cooper, who longs for a child. When they visit Merlin’s shop, Jonathan taunts the enigmatic wizard and threatens to ruin the store with a scathing newspaper piece. Merlin lends him a spellbook to prove his legendary powers, and Jonathan begins to experiment with the spells at home. An early failed attempt to summon a spirit leads to a surreal vision of Satan and an unsettling, almost literal breath of fire from Jonathan. The book’s powers quickly hook him, driving an obsession that comes at a terrible cost: the rapid consumption of his own life force, which ages him dramatically. In a reckless attempt to command a mystical servant, Jonathan tries to transform his beloved cat, but the creature turns demonic and attacks him. A second attempt, this time using the book’s rejuvenation spell and a blood sample from Madeline, seems to offer a cure, but the potion backfires. Jonathan regresses into infancy, leaving Madeline to choose whether to raise the former husband as her child, a decision that unsettles the couple’s future and hints at the unpredictable consequences of wielding such power.

In the second tale, a seemingly identical misfortune looms over a different life. A thief steals a cymbal-banging monkey from Merlin’s shop and sells it to a novelty store, where it is bought by a young boy’s mother as a birthday gift for her son, Michael. The toy’s ominous secret emerges: every time the monkey’s cymbals clash, a nearby living being dies. The boy’s father, David, seeks help from a psychic friend, who counsels him to discard the cursed object. He tries to dispose of it, but the boy reclaims the toy from the trash, and the danger intensifies. The monkey’s powers escalate into deadly chaos—attempts to strike Michael with a fatal accident by a passing car—until David manages to avert disaster by keeping the toy from its trigger. Desperation leads him to bury the monkey in a remote field, yet a fierce storm and a seismic quake appear to be summoned by the cursed object in an act of defiance. Although David finally seems to bury the threat, his relief is short-lived as a later visit from his mother brings the monkey back into Michael’s life. The family scrambles to escape as the toy’s deadly rhythm threatens again, only for Merlin to appear at last, retrieve the malevolent artifact, and vow to “deal with” the murderous object later.

Throughout the film, the tone balances wonder and warning, presenting magic as a force that can grant glimpses of power while quietly eroding the boundaries between desire, morality, and consequence. The two linked narratives emphasize how easily human longing—whether for child, status, or control—can be manipulated by forces beyond comprehension, leaving a wake of unintended harm that lingers long after the spellbook is closed.
