A desolate cliff face, sudden lightning, and a woman in white set the scene for this unusual short film. "Meridian" is a twelve-minute program available on Netflix, but created not for viewers, but to challenge video codecs and streaming technology. Director Curtis Clark incorporates peculiar effects, likely for artistic reasons, designed to test the limits of video compression and the complexities of the digital streaming process.

In a rain-soaked 1947 Los Angeles, Kevin Kilner as Mac Foster, a veteran detective, teams with his younger partner Reid Scott as Jake Sullivan to investigate the disappearances of three men who, on the surface, share little beyond a recent divorce—and a witness who swears there was something supernatural around the last case.

At Mac’s urging, Jake drives toward the cliff-lined coast. The sky opens up in a heavy downpour, turning the road slick and tense. In the rearview mirror, Elyse Levesque as Mysterious Woman briefly sits in the back seat; when he looks again, the seat is empty, leaving only the echoes of rain and a growing unease. The moment lingers like a warning, a whisper that nothing is as it seems.

Later, Mac discovers Jake’s car abandoned near the rock, and a storm rapidly rolls in, thunder muffling the waves as the wind gnaws at the edge of the shore. He leaves the vehicle and trudges along the beach, drawn toward a large cave that seems to breathe with the weather’s fury.

Inside the cave, the air climbs with a strange stillness. A ventriloquist’s dummy sits upright, almost expectant. A clock on a wall turns its numbers in a slow, uncanny circle. A stained-glass window casts fractured light across the damp stones, and projections of Mac’s own image flicker across the cave wall, blurring the line between observer and observed. The atmosphere feels thick with secrets as the space begins to pull him deeper into its strange machinery.

He then comes across the three missing men, and, astonishingly, Jake, all frozen in place as if paused by some invisible hand. The sense of danger tightens, and the air seems to hum with a motive power beyond ordinary cause. The mysterious woman lingers somewhere off to the side, watching as the scene unfolds, her presence a quiet, ominous punctuation mark on the unfolding tableau.

As the film draws to a close, the woman reappears, lingering behind Mac with an intent that remains just beyond reach, leaving the ending open to interpretation as the screen fades to black.
