Spoilers ahead
Carter, Matthew Davis, a thirty-something professor at a middling college, is introduced through memory and present-day disillusionment. Through flashbacks, we glimpse his earlier promise as a writer in an elite grad school class led by Rutger Hauer as Sanford Pollard, a brilliant yet abrasive mentor whose career has stalled after a Pulitzer win years before. Julia, Dagmara Dominczyk, Pollard’s graduate assistant and lover, drags Carter into a world of wealth, celebrity, and temptation. The three migrate to Pollard’s beach house, where Carter and Julia begin a clandestine romance that complicates their mentor-student dynamic.
