Masaan traces two intertwined lives in Varanasi, a city where ancient rituals share the streets with pressing modern struggles, and where ordinary moments can tilt toward tragedy or daring hope.

Devi Pathak [Richa Chadha] is a trainer at a coaching computer center and a young woman who becomes entangled in a troubling incident. When hotel staff tip off the police, Inspector Mishra [Bhagwan Tiwari] records Devi in a compromised moment with her student, Piyush Aggarwal. The aftermath is brutal: Piyush locks himself in the bathroom and ends his own life, and Mishra uses the footage to threaten Devi with abetting the suicide unless a hefty bribe reaches his hands. Devi’s father, Vidyadhar Pathak, a Sanskrit professor who now runs a modest book shop earning barely more than a few thousand rupees a month, finds himself pulled into a risky bet to try to secure his family’s future. He is drawn into Mishra’s scheme and, as the bribe grows, slips deeper into the game. Devi’s world begins to crack under the social stigma of her affair as she moves from one coaching center to another, facing harassment from colleagues and a relentless grind for work. A temporary government job with Indian Railways offers some relief, but Devi’s plan is clear: once the bribe from Mishra is paid in full, she intends to leave Varanasi to pursue studies at Allahabad University.

Deepak Kumar [Vicky Kaushal] belongs to one of Varanasi’s Dom families, the cremation workers who operate along the ghats. He is a diligent civil engineering student who dreams of a different life for himself and his family, a life that would free him from the hereditary burden. Deepak falls for Shaalu Gupta [Shweta Tripathi Sharma], a bright, high-caste girl who challenges the boundaries of caste and tradition with her willingness to take a risk on love. Their bond grows as they navigate the complexities of caste, ambition, and future prospects. A memorable moment on a trip to Allahabad on the river’s banks deepens their connection, and Shaalu’s openness about her own future against her parents’ expectations gives hope to the couple’s fragile romance.

Tragedy tests the two stories in parallel. Shaalu dies in a bus accident during a pilgrimage trip, her body among the many casualties brought to the cremation grounds where Deepak’s family works. Deepak is crushed by grief, yet he remains resolute and is eventually hired by Indian Railways as an engineer in Allahabad, stepping into a steadier future even as his personal heartbreak remains. In a separate, cruel turn of luck, Pathak bets Rs 10,000 on Jhonta [Nikhil Sahni], a young boy who helps at the shop, in a diving contest that is meant to bring in a fortune. Jhonta drowns, and Vidyadhar, moved by the boy’s plight, vows to pull him from danger—only to find himself forced into debt when Mishra’s coercion pushes him to cover the consequences. Jhonta recovers consciousness and reveals Shaalu’s ring—an object Deepak had tossed into the Ganga in a fit of grief—which Vidyadhar uses to settle the score with Mishra.

The web of debt, fear, and competing loyalties tightens as the film moves toward its crescendo. Devi visits Piyush’s family, where his father’s anger and rejection underscore the social scorn she faces as a woman who slept with a younger man. She makes her way to the Ganges to immerse the gift Piyush had given her on that fateful day, a symbolic gesture that braids the two families and their fates. By the river, Deepak appears, offering water, and a boatman appears with a possibility for a new path. The two strangers, whose lives have moved in parallel wheels of grief and survival, share a quiet moment on a boat bound for Sangam. The ride becomes a small, hopeful exchange—an opening toward a possible future built on mutual understanding rather than fear.

Among the voices in Masaan, a cameo appearance by Niharica Raizada adds to the texture of the world, a reminder that the city teems with lives that touch and shape the fates of its residents in fleeting, meaningful ways. The story remains grounded in the human costs of structural pressures—economic strain, caste expectations, social rumor, and the weight of tradition—while offering a patient, compassionate look at two young people trying to carve out a foothold in a city that knows both beauty and brutality.
