Mary Briany is an office worker who discovers she is being demoted by the boss she secretly loves to clear space for his girlfriend. In a moment of despair, she attempts suicide by jumping into the river. Tony Woodward, a dashing and somewhat indulgent bachelor, happens to drive by, pulls her from the water, and brings her to his mansion. There, his sharp-witted butler Godfrey and Tony do their best to manage a wildly uncooperative guest who refuses to accept the new arrangement with grace. The situation exposes a clash of worlds: Mary is earnest and wary, while Tony is carefree and prone to taking risks.
