Loggerheads is inspired by true events and follows the intertwined lives of an adoption “triad” — birth mother, child, and adoptive parents — as three stories unfold across three years in the days leading up to Mother’s Day. Each tale sits in a distinct slice of North Carolina: the Appalachian Mountains, the Piedmont (a broad, gently hilly plateau), and the Atlantic Coastal Plain, weaving together personal journeys, moons of memory, and quiet acts of courage that test the ties of family, kinship, and belonging.

In the Appalachian Mountains in Asheville, Grace—a driven airport car-rental agent who lives with her mother—steps away from her routine and toward a long-delayed mission. She quits her job to confront the legal barriers that keep her from locating the son she gave up when she was a teenager. Her quest is marked by patience and resolve, as she faces systems built to keep families apart while holding on to the memory of the child she once carried and hoped to be reunited with. The story paints a portrait of a woman’s quiet endurance and the weight of decisions made in youth, now tested against the realities of adulthood and the enduring power of a mother’s love.

Moving east to the shore, in Kure Beach on the Atlantic coast, Mark is introduced as a young man whose passion extends beyond his own life to the protection of loggerhead sea turtles. His path crosses with George, a friendly motel owner who offers him shelter and a place to belong. As Mark navigates new bonds and responsibilities, the narrative explores how care for vulnerable beings can reflect a deeper, sometimes unspoken, care for family and connection. In the center of the state, in the small town of Eden, a minister’s wife faces a painful domestic rift. She wrestles with her conservative husband as they confront the estrangement from their own son.
