Danny Foster, Kent Moran, is a struggling and hopeful songwriter who works at a diner, scribbling melodies on napkins between shifts. There, he meets Ariana “Sam” Scott, Alexia Rasmussen, a privileged young woman who is deaf. After a few weeks, she reveals her condition, and Danny accepts it with warmth. Danny takes her on a date to the movies, then they head back to the diner where he opens up about his love for music and his dreams of a life built around song. He begins to court Sam, hoping to share his music with someone who seems to listen without judgment.

During a lecture, Sam is ridiculed for answering a question, and she runs off to the restroom to collect herself. Nicole, a student from the same class, befriends her there, and the two form a quiet alliance. The two also find common ground in their memories of deceased relatives: Danny’s mother and father, and Sam’s father, touch on the grief that shapes who they are. Victoria, Cybill Shepherd, discovers that Danny and Sam are dating and immediately sets about breaking them apart. At a family party, Danny is kicked out when he tries to speak to Sam, signaling Victoria’s hold over the family dynamic. She then introduces Sam to Nigel, a wealthy young man she approves of, hoping to steer Sam toward a more controlled future. When Nigel attempts a sexual assault, Sam’s mother berates her, leaving Sam to navigate danger on her own. She runs away to find Danny, but is chased and confronted with the family’s power plays. Rather than leaving, Sam slaps her mother, an act witnessed by Roger, Frank Watson, who then informs Danny that Sam loves him, though she is being manipulated.

Sam soon learns that Victoria has blocked all avenues of communication with Danny. In a moment of courage, Sam finds her voice for the first time, scolding her mother as the caretaker quits in shock. The family tension underscores Victoria’s fear of losing control, a fear rooted in her own history. Meanwhile, Danny keeps performing at the diner, with Nicole in attendance because Sam cannot be there. As Danny’s health declines and cancer takes its toll, Sam stays by his side, and during a hospital visit, Danny and Sam have sex. Sam then undergoes ear surgery, which finally allows her to hear. After Danny’s funeral, Roger offers his support and congratulates Sam on her acceptance to a music school, signaling a hopeful path forward. Arriving in New York City to begin her studies, Sam is overwhelmed and moved by the sounds she can now hear for the first time.
