Set in 1912, the film follows Russian botanist Ivan Michurin, who declines lucrative offers from the United States to remain in the Russian Empire. Despite opposition from the tsarist authorities, the church and conventional scientists, he persists in his experimental breeding work, receiving backing from leading domestic scientists. After the October Revolution, his modest garden in Kozlov expands into a major state‑run nursery.
