Lessons of a Dream 2011

In 1874, fresh Oxford graduate Konrad Koch, Daniel Brühl, is hired by headmaster Prof. Gustav Merfeld, Burghart Klaußner, to teach English at the strictly run German boys’ school of Braunschweig. The climate inside the school is steeped in prejudice about England, with the students’ ideas about the island nation shaped by old stereotypes handed down from teachers and parents. The class is led by Felix Hartung, Theo Trebs, a lively and ambitious prefect, while Joost Bornstedt, Adrian Moore, the smaller boy, bears the weight of derision from his peers, especially because his mother belongs to a proletarian class deemed unfit for secondary education. The stage is set for a clash of culture, class, and pedagogy as Konrad tries to break through the barriers of tradition.

During an evening event, the chairman of the school board and Felix’s father, Richard Hartung, Justus von Dohnányi, scolds Konrad for not embracing the harsh, Prussian style traditionally used to mold young minds. In response, and driven by a belief in progressive education, Konrad—an admirer of Thomas Arnold’s approaches—decides to introduce football as a way to ignite interest in English and to expand the boys’ vocabulary by weaving football strategy into his lessons. What starts as a provocative experiment quickly takes root: all the students except Felix embrace the new sport, and the game becomes a practical classroom where teamwork, cooperation, and communication begin to blossom.

As the boys practice, a sense of camaraderie grows, and Joost earns genuine recognition for his contributions, much to Felix’s growing jealousy. The classroom, once defined by rigid discipline, begins to feel like a small community where each boy discovers a role. This shift alarms the school board, which views Konrad’s unorthodox methods as a threat to the established order and promptly bans the football program. Yet Konrad refuses to abandon the game; he arranges after-school and weekend practices so that the boys can continue to play and learn together, even in the face of official opposition.

When Felix, feeling guilty about his scheming, learns of the consequences, he and his classmates devise a plan to escalate the issue to a visiting imperial delegation, enlisting the help of the school secretary. The delegation, taking a broader view of education and culture, lifts the ban and approves football’s inclusion in the school curriculum. With the prohibition removed, the students resume their practices under Konrad’s steady guidance, despite ongoing resistance from the school board. A defining moment arrives when Konrad’s students face a young English football team in a match, and the German boys emerge victorious. The win is celebrated by the delegation, teachers, parents, and the public, signaling a hopeful shift in how education can blend discipline with creativity and teamwork.
