Lensman 1984

The story follows a farm boy named Kimball Kinnison. From a dying Lensman of the Galactic Patrol, he inherits a powerful Lens. This device carries information that would enable the Patrol to face a weapon crafted by the Boskone Empire. Created by the Arisians to stand up to the evil Eddorians, the Lenses merge the wearer’s mind with the cosmic consciousness of Arisia, guiding the young hero as he learns to wield their incredible power. A formidable foe, Lord Helmuth of Boskone, will stop at nothing to seize the Lens, setting a high-stakes chase in motion.

On his home planet Mqueie, the Boskone destroys the agricultural world, tearing apart the life he knows. His father, Gary Kinnison, a pioneering founder of the Galactic Patrol, is pulled into the conflict. If he had not lost an arm in battle, he might have become a Lensman himself. Yet, he sacrifices his life to secure Kimball’s escape from the pursuing Boskone fleet, a moment that steels Kimball for what lies ahead.

Kimball escapes with his horned, bearded near-human companion, Van Buskirk, and continues to meet others who guide him. He forms a bond with Clarissa MacDougall, a nurse and technician working with the Patrol, a practical ally who cannot fully explain how the Lens has moved from a dying mentor to the young recruit. Under the tutelage of a flying green dragon hero named Worsel, Kimball develops a deeper understanding of the Lens’s power and its potential to turn the tide in the ongoing struggle against Boskone.

As Kimball grows into the responsibilities the Lens imposes, he transmits the crucial formula to the Galactic Patrol fleet, a revelation that holds the key to Helmuth’s looming defeat. The discovery strengthens the Patrol’s ability to mount a coordinated attack against Helmuth, and the story emphasizes how the Lens’s shared consciousness can unite allies across vast distances to protect the galaxy.
