Ray, a dedicated owner of a family hardware store, operates alongside his brother Junior in a quaint Texas town. One fateful day, he receives a series of photographs from private detective Skip, revealing a shocking betrayal—his wife, Stacy-Lynn, appears to be having an affair. Devastated and despondent, Ray impulsively purchases a revolver from a local gun shop and heads to the motel captured in the incriminating snapshots, where he contemplates ending his life.

While in his vehicle, Ray’s life takes an unexpected turn when a stranger mistakenly enters his car, believing him to be a hitman named Harry. This stranger hands Ray a thick stack of cash as payment for a murder scheduled for the following day, leaving only a cryptic address as a clue to the target’s identity. As Harry arrives at the motel, Ray drives away, grappling with the moral implications of the money thrust upon him.

Struggling to confront the issues in his failing marriage, Ray begins to consider using the money to help finance the beauty salon that Stacy-Lynn dreams of opening. Lacking any experience in assassination, he decides to follow the address on the note and attempts to stalk the man living there. However, his bumbling approach leads to him being quickly detected. In a desperate fight, Ray accidentally shoots the man, then discards the body by the roadside, losing a photograph of his wife in the process. To worsen his emotional turmoil, he learns from Junior’s wife that Stacy-Lynn is, in fact, cheating on him with his own brother, a claim Ray finds hard to swallow.

The investigation uncovers that the deceased is a local lawyer named James Barlow. With the police finding the photograph of Stacy-Lynn next to Barlow’s body, suspicions arise concerning her involvement in the murder. The stranger who initially hired Ray surfaces at the hardware store, accusing Ray of stealing from Barlow’s safe after breaking in. He gives Ray a dire ultimatum to return the money within a day. Together, Ray and Skip delve into Barlow’s affairs, uncovering a blackmail plot linked to the influential car dealer Adam Ledoux, who was being extorted over his marital indiscretions.

As tension mounts, Harry tracks down the bar linked to the hit, seeking a waitress for information. His ferocity escalates when he tortures the waitress’s boyfriend for vital details before eliminating him and leaving her in shock. Meanwhile, Ledoux informs Skip and Ray that Barlow was entangled in a deal involving a $250,000 payoff that would protect his reputation. However, Ray recalls that Barlow had a briefcase which he left behind. When they find the abandoned car, they discover the briefcase filled with cash. Yet, overwhelmed by his longing to save his marriage, Ray points a gun at Skip to claim the money for Stacy-Lynn’s beauty venture.

Ray’s troubles escalate when he returns home, only to be betrayed as Stacy-Lynn and Junior turn him in for murder, clutching the briefcase as evidence. In a climactic turn of events, Harry ambushes the police transport taking Ray to jail, killing the officers and providing Ray a chance to flee. Desperation drives him to Junior’s house, where he learns that Junior has abandoned his wife for Stacy-Lynn and has been embezzling from the hardware store.

As the plot thickens, Harry takes Skip hostage and contacts Ray with a threat: return the money or face consequences. Ray tracks down his brother’s truck to a motel, discovering Stacy-Lynn in the shower with Junior. In a fit of rage, he shoots Junior and shockingly declares he wants a divorce.

The final standoff takes place at the motel when Harry arrives with Skip. A tense exchange of gunfire erupts as Ray demands that Skip be let go first. As the confrontation escalates, both men are fatally wounded, leaving their fates intertwined in violence. The film culminates with Skip offering Stacy-Lynn a ride as she hesitantly accepts, hinting at the emotional turmoil left in the wake of betrayal and tragedy.
