Paavaadai follows a young girl, Kutty, who is forced into child labor after a family tragedy. [Kutty] is the daughter of Pavadai, a potter whose fragile livelihood in a village on the outskirts of Madurai is kept alive by his love for her. When [Pavadai] dies in an accident, Kutty is sent to work for an urban family, hopeful at first about the promise of better food, clothes, and a bit of security.

Kannammaa, Kannammaa, often called Kutty by those who care for her, carries this heavy burden into a new home. The couple who employ her treat her with kindness at the outset, but the arrival of the mother-in-law tips the balance and casts a shadow over her days. The old woman and her grandson subject Kutty to increasing mistreatment, and each day brings a new ache, a new ache to endure in silence.

Despite the growing misery, Kutty’s relatives visit and the grandmother tries to project happiness, fooling outsiders into believing that Kutty is content. Kutty’s world grows tenser when she witnesses a teenage girl in the neighboring apartment being molested, and soon after learns that the girl has died by suicide. The revelation deepens Kutty’s fear and loneliness, even as the couple’s support pockets some relief from the burden of blame.

Determined to escape her plight, Kutty writes to her mother, begging to be taken back to the village. She finds some reassurance in the kindness of a store owner, [Vivek], who lends a hand and stands by her as she navigates this perilous situation. Yet Kutty’s knowledge is limited—she does not know her village’s name, only the directions—making rescue feel almost impossible.

One night, driven by desperation, Kutty attempts to run away. A man who runs a shop near Vivek’s appears to offer help, and another man becomes involved, bargaining for money. The first man tells Kutty that the other will guide her to her mother, but the route proves grim: the train’s destination is Mumbai, not home, hinting at a fate far more dire than she imagines.

The film closes on a quiet, unresolved note, with Kutty’s face etched with a mix of fear and fragile hope as she confronts an uncertain future and clings to the memory of home.
