Mae West portrays Rose Carlton, “The Frisco Doll,” a kept woman who kills her keeper Chan Lo in self-defense and escapes on a steamer toward Nome, Alaska, while a murder warrant hangs over her head. On the voyage, she is joined by a missionary, Sister Annie Alden, portrayed on screen by Helen Jerome Eddy. Sister Annie is bound for Nome to rescue a financially struggling mission, and her arrival sparks a spark of hope in Rose even as tragedy strikes when Annie dies en route. Rose uses Annie’s identity in a bid to evade capture, and in a daring, controversial turn, disguises Annie as a prostitute—a sequence that would later be censored in some markets.

The Frisco Doll becomes determined to honor Sister Annie’s promise of saving the mission, and she mobilizes both faith and street smarts to raise the necessary funds.
