David Stratton John Forsythe is a rising politician whose wife is away in San Francisco visiting relatives. He returns one night to an unexpected scene: a young woman, Jody Ann-Margret, is sleeping in his daughter’s bed. Jody has just escaped from a juvenile detention home, where she stabbed a matron and started a fire. Though David wants to call the police, Jody tells him a tale of woe and he is moved.
He reluctantly helps her: buys her a dress, gives her some money, and puts her on a bus. Yet soon he learns that Jody is a wanted fugitive who had been lying to him. When he returns home, Jody is still there, refusing to leave and threatening to create a scandal if he forces her out. Worried about his political fortunes, David chooses to let her stay, hoping to keep things quiet for the moment.
Jody invites three friends to the house, including two ruffians, Ron Peter Brown and Buck Skip Ward, who bully David into letting them throw a wild party. The night spirals into trouble as a fight breaks out, leaving Ron with a deep razor wound. The trio heads across the Mexico border with David along as an unwilling participant. They drop Ron off with a local doctor, and Buck is abandoned when the car becomes entangled in barbed wire.
Jody and David end up in a seedy Tijuana motel. When Ron and Buck return, a chase ensues and their car crashes, killing them both. David, badly injured, wakes in the hospital to learn that just before her death, Jody had told the authorities that she had been in the car with Ron and Buck, effectively clearing him of suspicion.
