King Lear Reviews & Ratings
Our Echo Score gives it 68/100, strongest in character & emotion (78) and weakest in story & flow (55).
King Lear Echo Score Breakdown
In terms of the adaptation as a whole, the production offers a compelling ensemble performance but is hampered by structural trimming that disrupts narrative flow. Strong points include a richly atmospheric setting and a haunting score, while the heavy abridgment and uneven pacing create occasional confusion. The direction balances moments of insight with heavy‑handed choices, leading to a mixed but respectable viewing experience.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 68
The visual presentation combines an austere modern London backdrop with restrained production design that reinforces the bleak tone of the tragedy. Cinematography occasionally falls into flat, stage‑like compositions, but moments of inventive framing add texture. Editing rhythm is uneven, especially in the opening, contributing to a sense of heaviness, while the overall craft remains competent.
- Character & Emotion 78
Performances are the strongest element, with the majority of the cast delivering nuanced, emotionally resonant portrayals that capture the play’s intensity. Central figures such as Lear, Goneril, and Gloucester benefit from depth and chemistry, whereas secondary roles like Edmund and Regan suffer from under‑development. The lead’s interpretation is competent yet comparatively restrained, creating a slight imbalance within an otherwise compelling ensemble.
- Story & Flow 55
The narrative suffers from aggressive condensation, resulting in a choppy progression that can disorient viewers unfamiliar with the source material. Key scenes are retained, preserving dramatic peaks, yet the loss of connective dialogue reduces overall cohesion. Pacing oscillates between rushed sequences and lingering moments, ultimately delivering a compelling core story that is undermined by its fragmented structure.
- Sensory Experience 72
The production’s soundscape, highlighted by a haunting original score, reinforces the bleak atmosphere and accentuates key emotional beats. Visual styling employs a restrained color palette and contemporary settings that lend immediacy, though occasional flat compositions diminish cinematic depth. Overall, the auditory and visual elements coalesce effectively, providing a sensory framework that supports the tragic tone.
- Rewatch Factor 65
The film’s strong ensemble work and memorable visual moments offer incentives for repeat viewing, yet the fragmented pacing and omitted passages limit narrative clarity on subsequent watches. Audiences attuned to the performances may appreciate nuanced details, while newcomers might find the disjointed flow detracting. Consequently, rewatch value is moderate, appealing chiefly to Shakespeare enthusiasts.

Spoilers ahead
Set in a highly militarized version of a 21st-century London, the sovereign King Lear, Anthony Hopkins gathers his family one evening to declare how he will divide his kingdom among his three daughters. The two elder daughters, Regan Emily Watson and Goneril Emma Thompson, make open statements about their allegiance to and love for their father and receive each a share of the kingdom. Cordelia Florence Pugh declines to make such a declaration, finding the act superficial, and is denied any inheritance, becoming a bride to the French King Chukwudi Iwuji with no dowry.
