Television director Jake Tanner, Paul Wesley, travels to a small town to film a reality show about the town’s hockey team, hoping to capture behind‑the‑scenes drama and competitive spirit. Soon after arrival, the town’s local star, Jaynie Hansen, Leighton Meester, is found decapitated by a wire strung between two trees, and the authorities quietly label the death an accident. The jolt of violence unsettles the crew and sets a uneasy tone for what lies ahead.

Jake sits down with the show’s producers, Lee, and Phoebe Hilldale, Torrey DeVitto, who decide to push for a real investigation into Jaynie’s death. At the local high school, Jake meets Lee Tyson, Cyia Batten, a crew member who believes the death was no accident and points the finger at the hockey team’s leadership, notably Coach Carhartt Andy Fischer-Price. As Jake gets acquainted with the rest of the crew—Mike, Daphne, Luke, and Greg—the atmosphere grows increasingly tense. He also encounters the team captain, Vance Carhartt, and the head cheerleader, Erin Gorman, Maitland McConnell, who bring youth, adrenaline, and a touch of high‑school politics into the mix. The town’s mood turns ominous when the ever‑present shadow of danger seems to lurk behind every doorway.

Tragedy compounds tragedy when Mrs Falls, the cheerleading coach, is killed by a masked killer who drags her into a circular saw, widening the fear that someone is orchestrating these deaths. The crew interviews Vance Carhartt, who swears he’ll seek vengeance on whoever is behind the violence, while the atmosphere in the school grows more claustrophobic. Into this mix arrives controversial celebrity Blanca Champion, Kaley Cuoco, accompanied by her assistant Nik, Robert Buckley, to help film on the show. Blanca’s arrival stirs tension and curiosity, and it complicates the crew’s fragile sense of safety.

The crew’s search for truth leads them to Jaynie’s father, Coach Hansen, Bruce Bohne, whose recent release from prison for the murder of his wife rekindles town gossip and fear. Hansen’s presence injects a volatile edge into every interaction, and his anger toward the crew forces them to leave his home. Back at the school, Connor, Jackson Bond Jackson Bond tells Jake that Jaynie’s death was not an accident, deepening the mystery and fuelling the crew’s resolve to uncover the truth.

One night, the group ventures to a bar and learns that the death of Mrs Falls is once again dismissed as an accident by locals, until the town’s increasingly paranoid climate makes that defense feel hollow. Hansen resurfaces—this time to warn the crew away from pursuing the truth too aggressively. The following day, Lee and Phoebe clash over the direction of the show; Lee’s insistence on focusing on the locals’ deaths sharpens the conflict and raises the stakes for everyone involved. Meanwhile, Nik is sent to Hansen’s house to retrieve gear left there, and he discovers a horrifying tableau: Hansen’s body, wrapped in plastic with his throat slashed, a grotesque clue that the killer’s reach extends beyond the high school.

The tension spikes when Blanca argues with Erin and attempts to leave town, only to realize the town has no mobile signal, trapping them in a digital blackout that heightens paranoia. After filming a hockey match, the crew heads to a bar again, but Luke—the team’s steady behind‑the‑scenes presence—stays behind to work out and is brutally attacked by the killer, who removes his hand with a cleaver before finishing the job. The danger becomes personal as the killer singles out the crew members one by one.

Daphne decides to leave the bar, and soon after she discovers Greg’s car. Investigating, she finds Greg dead—beheaded—before the killer arrives and abducts her. The remaining crew discovers their missing colleagues, prompting heated arguments and accusations among the survivors. Lee descends into a boiler room and uncovers that the killer has been filming the massacres using a lipstick camera. Before she can alert anyone, the killer suspends her with a chain, cutting the communications short and driving the crew further into panic.

Jake, Blanca, and Keir retreat to a cabin to regroup, only to find more footage showing Daphne’s capture. They return to the school and drop Blanca off so she can attempt to signal for help on a CB radio, while Jake and Keir search for Daphne’s whereabouts. In a parallel thread, Phoebe—a moment of comic relief amid the horror—fumbles through a local shop for laxatives but is swiftly assaulted by the killer. She hides as Coach Carhart arrives for a frightful assist, and the two flee to the coach’s car. Their escape is thwarted when the killer slips into the back seat and slashes Carhartt’s throat; Phoebe barely escapes and makes it back to the school to warn the others.

Jake and Keir finally uncover the killer’s lair in the forest, but a bear trap halts their progress, forcing Keir to sprint for help. Back at the school, Blanca remains trapped, but Connor finds her and shows her a video the killer has made, apparently singling Blanca out for his fixation. The duo discovers Daphne’s corpse in the school, and Blanca narrowly escapes a new confinement by crawling through the vents, only to be confronted by the killer. The killer’s identity is revealed in a chilling culmination: the murderer is an obsessed Mike, a man determined to be close to Blanca, and his single-minded fixation drives him to murder everyone in the pursuit of his desire.

In a climactic clash, Keir still fights to save Blanca, but she is stabbed by Mike. Mike then targets Blanca directly, and Jake arrives just in time to shoot Mike three times in the chest with a shotgun, seemingly ending the threat. The morning after, police retrieve Mike’s body in a body bag, and Jake learns that Keir survived the stabbing. The closing revelation lands with a stark twist: Mike was wearing a bulletproof vest, a detail that reframes everything he had done and leaves the audience with a chilling sense that danger can linger even after the killer is presumed dead.
