One hundred kilometers north of Toronto, Rufus Elkin has found his own private haven on a small, isolated island. When Rufus Elkin dies alone of uncertain causes, local authorities led by Gord Cooper, a former Hong Kong narcotics cop, intrude into his world. The investigation sticks to what is logical and probable, ignoring anything that hints at the supernatural. This stance begins to crack when Charlize Elkin, the professor’s granddaughter, returns from Bali to perform the burial required by his will. Her in-depth knowledge of her grandfather’s research sharpens her sense that danger lingers on the island.

Meanwhile, in the city, the dean quietly works to cover up a developing scandal involving the illegal importation of irradiated diamonds into Canada. Rufus had discovered that a shipment of Balinese statues destined for a Toronto exhibition concealed diamonds owned by an Asian smuggling cartel, led by Ibrahim Sattar. As Gord Cooper’s team keeps taking hits—some by Sattar’s men, others by the island’s growing, ominous perils—the detective is forced to turn to Charlize for help. A clash of forces unfolds, but it is only Charlize who senses a threat on the island greater than the cartel. In the finale, the balance between good and evil is restored, and Charlize must unravel a layered message left by her grandfather: the message hides the island location of two statues that hold a gruesome secret, a secret that could reach all the way to the city of Toronto.
