Katak: The Brave Beluga 2023

Katak Maxime Le Flaguais is a beluga calf who hasn’t quite turned white yet, and he grows up in the Saguenay Fjord National Park surrounded by a close-knit pod. His world is shaped by his overprotective mother Marina, his pregnant aunt Estelle, and a circle of friends that includes Lulu, along with Bosco the elder beluga and his aging grandmother Perlette. The pod’s harmony is strained by declining births, and a tense moment arrives when Estelle suffers a miscarriage after the sound of a distant boat horn disturbs her. The looming question isn’t just about survival for the pod, but about what it means to carry on a family lineage when the future looks increasingly uncertain.

Bosco believes the pod may have to journey south to endure, while Katak overhears a troubling whisper—the possibility that his grandmother could lose the will to live if Estelle’s miscarriage weighs on her heart. Motivated by love and duty, Katak resolves to venture north to the Arctic to bring back his grandfather, the fabled survivor who once defeated the fearsome killer whale Jack-Knife. This perilous trek ushers Katak into a world of unlikely allies and ancient legends, where the path is as treacherous as it is hopeful. Along the way, he befriends Cyrano Yves Jacques, a sturgeon who chooses to accompany him on the quest, and together they narrowly elude the menacing Jack-Knife Mario Saint-Amand, a predator who harbors a personal vendetta against Katak’s bloodline. The journey also introduces Jack-Lyn Émilie Josset, Jack-Knife’s vegetarian daughter who rebels against her father’s predatory legacy and becomes an unexpected ally to Katak.

As rumors ripple through the forest and ocean, other animals chime in with advice and warnings, and Katak’s resolve hardens. Jack-Knife’s pursuit grows more complex when he discovers his daughter’s friendship with Katak, prompting a rift between father and daughter that adds a charged emotional layer to the chase. Meanwhile, the pod back home—led by Lulu Ludivine Reding, Bosco [Jeff Boudreault], and Alby Jérémie Desbiens—sets out in search of Katak after hearing rumors of his journey. The voyage is punctuated by moments of danger: Cyrano falls ill, the pack must navigate shifting ice and sudden iceberg collapses, and a polar bear threatens their fragile group.

Katak and Cyrano press on toward the Arctic, with Albi trying to keep spirits high as the miles stretch on. Their trek leads them to a dramatic rescue moment when Jack-Knife and his daughter Jack-Lyn return to aid the beleaguered group, enabling a narrow escape. Jack-Knife experiences a hard truth as he reconciles with his daughter and contends with his own mortality, ultimately sacrificing himself to save Katak and the others.
