Unnithan, Prem Nazir and Ammini Kutty, Lakshmi, are the heart of a small family that also includes their two daughters, Parvathi, Poornima Bhagyaraj, and Sarala, Jalaja. Unnithan is an advocate in name, but he does not practice law because his steadfast principles push him away from the courtroom and the compromises it often demands. Ammini Kutty, coming from a wealthy background, is proud of her status and the comforts it affords, which sometimes puts her at odds with her husband’s quiet rigidity. Parvathi, eager to carve out her own path, enrolls in a driving school run by Balachandra Menon. As the lessons progress, a mutual attraction develops, and Parvathi’s feelings for the instructor grow, adding a new complication to the household’s already tense dynamics.

Sarala, meanwhile, falls for her Lecturer and makes the bold decision to marry him, a choice that challenges parental expectations and tests the family’s unity. The romance between Sarala and her partner unfolds against the backdrop of a household that is already divided by differing loyalties and ambitions.

Ammini Kutty resists both of her daughters’ loves, while Unnithan attempts to mediate with a blend of faith in his children and respect for his wife’s concerns. The clash between mother and mother-in-law intensifies as the women in the family weigh the price of happiness against the weight of tradition.

Into this already fragile picture enters Avarachan, [K P Ummer], a neighbor and ex-serviceman who lives with his wife Annie, [Sukumari]. The couple’s somber existence is marked by a lack of children and a pervasive sense of disappointment, a condition that colors their interactions with everyone around them.

Then Biju, played by [Baiju Santhosh], suddenly appears as Avarachan’s illegitimate son, a truth known to only one member of the family—Unnithan. This revelation introduces a secret that unsettles the already strained relationships and foreshadows further heartbreak and misgivings within the home.

As time passes, news of a forthcoming grandmotherhood arrives, bringing Ammini Kutty back into closer contact with Parvathi and rekindling old emotions and memories tied to family history. The death of Avarachan shocks the neighborhood and deepens the sense of fragility that threads through the lives of everyone involved.

The discovery that Biju might be Unnithan’s son fractures the trust between Unnithan and Ammini Kutty, setting their relationship on a path toward separation. The couple’s estrangement underscores the central themes of loyalty, lineage, and the uncertain tides of love in a family bound by pride and history.
