Manickam Lal and Choman Siddique are best friends in a small village where cockfighting is more than a sport—it’s a way of life. Manickam has developed a near-perfect mastery of the birds and the game, often fighting on behalf of Choman against the formidable rival Gounder Manoj K Jayan. The bond between the two men stands at the center of the village’s buzzing arena, where cheers and rivalries intertwine with everyday life, and where the fate of their friendships hangs on every match.

Kannaki Nandita Das forms a close bond with Manickam, while Kumudam Geethu Mohandas, Choman’s sister, admires him from afar. When Choman learns of Kannaki’s growing closeness to his friend, he erupts in anger and presses for Manickam to marry Kumudam, even going so far as to publicize their wedding at a local function. Manickam explains to Kumudam that his affection for her is brotherly, not romantic, leaving Kumudam both heartbroken and hopeful that time might change his mind. The rift between friends and lovers deepens as Choman’s trust erodes and Kannaki’s world becomes increasingly defined by jealousy and fear of losing Manickam.

Kannaki’s worries are stoked by Kanakamma Kalpana, a fortune teller who feeds the growing suspicions with sly rumors about Manickam. In a bid to keep Manickam close, Kannaki presents him with what she claims is a trained cock, but it is untested and rough in its temper. Manickam takes the bird to a fight against Choman’s cock, and the loss that follows opens an emotional crack: Kannaki’s deception is revealed, and she admits she did it to keep Manickam all to herself, driving a wedge between him, Choman, and Kumudam.

The treachery snowballs as Choman and Gounder plot to ruin Manickam at a local festival. Kumudam pleads with her brother not to fight, but Gounder’s insistence that Kannaki be separated from Manickam—with the looming prize of the match as leverage—sets the stage for a showdown. Kanakamma’s machinations reach a fever pitch when she arranges a private meeting between Kumudam and Manickam; Kannaki is certain she has proof of infidelity. In reality, Manickam tells Kumudam that he still views her as a sister, not a lover, prompting Kumudam to confess that her love remains unchanged. Kannaki, furious, orders Kumudam not to meet him again, deepening the sense that everyone is playing a dangerous game.

A local snake seller becomes part of the web of deception as Kanakamma’s plan unfolds. Kannaki acquires a highly poisonous snake in a bid to seal Manickam’s fate, while Ravunni Cochin Haneefa—a key facilitator in the scheme—moves between loyalties and duty. Manickam, meanwhile, is set to marry the vision of a future with Kannaki, and he receives a wedding saree as a token of that promise. He believes the match will come after the next win, and Kannaki, stepping into the Sarpa Kavu—a symbolic, perilous space—orders Ravunni to carry a message that she will leave once Manickam has chosen Kumudam. The plan hinges on control, deception, and a dangerous trust in fortune.

The festival arrives, and Manickam wins the match, inflicting severe damage on Choman’s cock. A confrontation between rival factions erupts, and Gounder flees the scene, his power tested and questioned. Returning home with the victory, Manickam carries the crowd’s cheers, but Ravunni delivers Kannaki’s message, shattering his sense of joy. Grief-stricken, he locks himself inside, refuses comfort, and fights to protect what he believes is his honor. He wounds and torments the cock until the bird’s beak finds his jugular vein. Ravunni races to intervene, but Kannaki’s demand to reclaim what she believes is hers cannot be appeased. When Kannaki finally emerges, she finds Manickam dying beside her. Her heart breaks into a wail, and in a final act of tragedy she ends the cycle of vengeance by releasing the deadly snake she bought, dying at Manickam’s side as the life they built together fades away.
