Vishwanathan, Mohanlal, a thug-turned-cab driver, lives in Mumbai next to his friend Johny, Lal, a pimp who exploits vulnerable women and lures them to a brothel. One day, while the two are driving, a man named Damodaran, Siddique, enters the cab and holds Vishwan at gunpoint. As the ride unfolds, Johny and Vishwan manage to disarm him, but he dies in a subsequent accident. When Vishwan checks the dead man’s belongings, he finds stolen jewellery and letters from his sister Bhanu, Manju Warrier, which reveal that the man’s name is Damodaran and that his family in a village back home is weighed down by debts that threaten their properties. Driven by a sense of obligation, Vishwan decides to travel to Kerala to help them.
In Kerala, Bhanu is a short-tempered blacksmith who carries the weight of being the family’s sole breadwinner. Her household includes their grandparents, an unmarried elder sister Suma, who has a child, and a younger sister Raji who attends school. The family also faces intimidation from Kumarettan’s quarry workers who harass Bhanu while she works on their tools. Vishwan meets Bhanu’s world upon arriving at the village, bringing gifts and claiming to be a friend of Damodaran who has left for the Gulf and entrusted him with assisting the family. Initially cautious, Bhanu tells him to leave with his gifts, and he complies, though the tension between outsiders and the village remains.
The harassment resumes the next day, now more direct, when Kumarettan grabs Bhanu and she bites him in self-defense. That night, Kumarettan is seen harassing the family again in front of their house, an act that Vishwan witnesses. The following day, Vishwan confronts Kumarettan at the quarry, trying to persuade him to stop the abuse, and a fight ensues, with Vishwan gaining the upper hand.
debts, Vishwan reveals he paid the bank loan that Damodaran’s family thought they owed, claiming that Damodaran had asked him to do so. He also convinces the lenders to take 25,000 rupees as an advance repayment from him, with the rest due in six months. Bhanu confronts Vishwan the next day, realizing he lied about being Damodaran’s friend, and asks him to tell the truth; he complies, and Bhanu breaks down in tears.
Later, Vishwan visits his own family, including his mother and stepfather, and it is disclosed that Vishwan ran away from home after slashing his stepfather, leaving him paralyzed. When Vishwan meets his mother, she initially welcomes him, but the stepfather’s question about the visitor prompts her to insist that Vishwan is not her son. He returns to Damu’s village to reconnect with Johnny, who has come looking for him.
Vishwan and Johnny begin working in the quarry and settle into the village, hoping to break the cycle of crime. Johnny’s remark about Bhanu’s beauty inspires Vishwan to act, and he pursues Bhanu, making his feelings clear and the pair beginning a secret romance. The two men’s friendship begins to strain as Vishwan fears Johnny’s old temperament might resurface, and Johnny contemplates returning to Mumbai.
Tragedy strikes when Vishwan learns from a newspaper that his mother has died. He returns home briefly to perform the funeral rites and reconcile with his stepfather. On his return to the village, he discovers that Johnny had once asked for Suma’s hand in marriage. Vishwan objects to the match, though he doesn’t offer a clear reason. Johnny arrives with clothes for Suma, and it becomes clear that Damu’s consent is needed for the alliance. A heated confrontation follows when Johnny discovers Vishwan’s objection, and Johnny abandons Vishwan’s family to align with Kumarettan. They kidnap Raji and her lover to sell her, a move that triggers Vishwan’s fury and a fight with Johnny, who is hospitalized afterward. Kumarettan, through Johnny, learns who the brothel owner is, and Johnny sends the quarry owner to Vishwan, revealing the lovers’ hideout.
Vishwan leads an assault on Kumarettan’s group, freeing the captured lovers. After Johnny is discharged from the hospital, he apologizes to Damodaran’s family and contemplates leaving the village. Vishwan stops him, insisting that he stay, and the two men reconcile, resuming their friendship and continuing their joint life in the village.
