Being unable to maintain his maternal uncle’s ancestral house, Biman and his wife Dipa sell the property to a buyer who plans to demolish it and build something new there. They want Kakababu and his nephew Santu to visit the place on 5 March because Biman must hand over the building to the buyer by 8 March. However, [Santu]’s examinations end on 9 March, so he cannot accompany them. Together with an expert antique dealer, they travel to a house in Alinagar near Birbhum, and the group includes Asit Dhar, an intriguing figure who knows his way around old relics.
In the course of their conversations, Biman shares a backstory about his mother’s uncle, Dharma Narayan Rao, who chose a Christian path and adopted the name Gregory Rao. This religious shift led to his banishment from his family, and years later, when he was brought back home, he had become eccentric. Yet he spoke often of a valuable item lurking in his possession. After Rao’s death, a search of his room yielded no obvious treasure. [Asit Dhar] grows curious and, one night, tries to enter Rao’s room but finds it impossible. The next morning, everyone returns to the room, and [Asit Dhar] sees something that awakens a greedy intent to steal.
A confrontation follows as [Kakababu] tries to reason with him, and [Asit Dhar] even challenging him to identify the stolen item. Kakababu seeks police help to recover whatever was taken, while he tasks his nephew to observe [Asit Dhar] and photograph his movements and routine. Throughout the day, [Asit Dhar] ends up returning with 12 pearls and some jewelry he claims to have found in the bed where Gregory Rao slept. He insists that these items, not the famous ruby necklace of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah that others suspect, were what he stole.
As the pursuit unfolds, a dramatic moment occurs when, while leaving, [Santu] deliberately nudges [Asit Dhar] in a bid for vengeance on his uncle. In that instant, [Asit Dhar]’s briefcase bursts open, revealing a Gutenberg Bible. Kakababu realizes at once that it is the Bible he had stolen, not the other supposed treasures. The trio flings into action, and they manage to nab him at the airport just before he boards a flight to London. The story closes with Kakababu confirming that the Bible will be preserved in the National Library, with the name of [Asit Dhar] as its discoverer, ensuring that the true story behind the theft is remembered.
