Lenny, a 14-year-old boy residing in the Bronx during the summer of 1955, is captivated by the idea of sex, a typical curiosity for a teenager. However, he finds himself too young and intimidated to actually engage in it, so he decides to spend his summer vacation trying to witness others in an “act of love.” Unfortunately, this ambition turns out to be more challenging than he anticipated. When caught in the midst of spying by his mother, Sylvia, and stepfather, they promptly send him off to his Aunt Norma and Uncle Phil’s home in “the country,” which is ironically situated in Queens.
At first, Lenny feels his plans have unraveled, and boredom seems imminent. However, everything changes when he forms a new group of friends, a band of young teens who call themselves a “sex club.” While these friends also shy away from actual encounters, their discussions about sex provide Lenny with much more insightful information than he previously had access to back in the Bronx. The plot thickens when Lenny encounters Hedy, an alluring nurse with a past as a bra ad model, who is twice his age. Lenny finds himself both enamored and invigorated by Hedy, which propels his summer aspirations into a fuller swing.
As the summer progresses, Lenny’s naive obsession with sex evolves into a more profound exploration of growing up. The experience brings forth themes of betrayal, loneliness, and the true meaning of what an “act of love” truly signifies. Through his adventures and misadventures, Lenny not only seeks answers to his teenage curiosities but also navigates the complexities of adolescence and what it means to connect with others on a deeper level.
